Chick Lit Genre
When I first began reading in the chick lit genre, I didn’t even realize it was a genre. I search for books that either the author or title was recommended to me, or I think the cover and synopsis sounds interesting enough. It was probably my fifth book in that I saw a common pattern emerging in my reading materials. Each novel revolved around a woman and her current situation. They talked extensively about love: either the heroine was trying to find love, looking in the wrong place, or trying to get her boyfriend to just propose already. No matter which book I chose, it touched on some sort of subject that I could find interesting to read about: love, family, career choices, pregnancy, addiction, friendships, and so much more. Each book was written with humor and a light heartedness about it; even with a more serious subject I can find myself smiling in places.
Another great concept about chick lit is that readers can easily relate to so many characters that are written about. Sure, some have high powered glamorous jobs, yet they are struggling to find Mr. Right or can never be good enough for their mothers. There is some aspect to each main character that so many readers can find relatable. The writing is in a personal, confiding tone, which also ties in with how relatable the story is.
Since realizing how drawn I was to these types of books, I have found that there truly is something for everybody. At first, I was worried that each book would be the same: same characters, same plot, same results = boring! But I was pleasantly surprised to find that was not the case. Each book offers a new topic, makes me laugh, and better- keeps me thinking even after I have finished the reading.
It is easy to spot a chick lit book- it’s the one with the bright pink cover with something glamorous and girly splashed on it. Okay, this isn’t true for every single chick lit book, but you can get what I am saying. The covers look fun, drawing in more readers to buy that book.
To tie everything together, chick lit is a genre of books that is written by women for women. It seems that no topic is off limits for the authors, and each novel is a new adventure for the reader to dive into. The main characters range in age from early 20’s to late 60’s. The plot centers around life issues with women, far too many to name them all that have been covered. I suggest everyone picks up at least one chick lit book, and assure you that you will get lost in the story. Happy Reading!
