#BookReview: Honeymoon Alone by Nicole Macaulay

About the Book

A chance encounter sparks the adventure of a lifetime… For 26-year-old Lucy Gray, life revolves around her family, friends and a classroom full of third graders. Reliable and responsible, she puts everyone’s needs before her own, often without even realizing it.

In a chance meeting with the psychic at her sister’s 80s-themed wedding, Lucy is confronted with the idea that she is missing out on life and should follow the signs of fate happening all around her. Awakening to this realization, these signs spur Lucy to take a last-minute trip to London – the very trip her sister had reserved as a honeymoon backup plan. She’ll just have to pretend to be her sister… what could go wrong?

Once in London, what Lucy hoped to be the getaway she’s always dreamed of turns into an adventure she never expected. Tangled in lies and in over her head, she struggles to follow the signs – and her heart – to figure out who she truly is.

With depth and humor, author Nicole Macaulay has crafted a lighthearted, charming read with Honeymoon Alone. Relatable and full of personality, readers will undoubtedly see a little of themselves and their own families in the characters that seem to leap off the pages. At its heart is a story about friendship and romance, and how the most unconventional path can lead to a happy ending.

My Review

Honeymoon Alone is the debut novel from Nicole Macaulay and what a splash this makes! A delightful chick lit escape, I loved following Lucy to London as she tries to follow signs and fate – as suggested by a psychic at her sister’s wedding. I could totally see myself doing the same thing if I had switched lives with Lucy. She’s not exactly happy and fulfilled and needs a break, and more importantly – needs to do something for herself. When her sister forgets to cancel honeymoon #2 and Lucy overhears the confirmation message, she takes it upon herself to pretend she is on her honeymoon at a charming London hotel – for honeymooners alone. While checking in and realizing she might be turned away if not newly married, she gets a fill-in husband who comes with his own slew of personal issues, but even with a “husband” on her arm, the hotel staff still seems suspicious of Lucy.

Cue a whole bunch of fun plot twists. I loved that I really felt I didn’t know what would come next with all of the characters. I was kept on my toes from beginning to end, and loved the humor that came from Lucy’s adventures. The London setting was beautifully written, and the book moved at a quick pace without feeling rushed. If you are a chick lit or rom com fan, I would highly recommend you check this out!
