CLP Blog Tours Book Review: Getting Skinny by Monique Domovitch

Monique Domovitch is on tour now with CLP Blog Tours and Getting Skinny

getting-skinnySummary:

Owning a restaurant is as crazy for Nicky Landry as an alcoholic owning a bar. But despite having to cram herself into a body shaper to look decent in a dress, life is pretty good. She’s throwing the party of the year for her graduating doctor boyfriend, Rob, who she’s sure is going to propose—until his new girlfriend shows up at the party.

After ordering Rob to get his stuff out of her house and get lost, Nicky finds him faceup with her expensive Chroma knife sticking right out of his cheating heart.

As the prime suspect, Nicky is in hot water. And no matter how hard she tries to clear her name, her problems only mount. She’s convinced she can solve the murder—if only she can figure out the identity of the skinny person seen walking away with Rob after the party.

Getting “Skinny” won’t be easy for Nicky, but she never imagined it would be life or death…

Review:

I love chick lit mystery novels, and Getting Skinny was right up my alley! Fun and fast-paced from page one, readers follow Nicky through struggling to keep her new restaurant afloat, a break-up with her boyfriend Rob, finding him murdered in her own house, and suspecting everybody around her of committing the crime – while she is the number one suspect in the eyes of the police. Nicky tries valiantly to prove her innocence, all while struggling to get over the breakup that happened just before she was being accused of murder, running her business, and flirting with the cute next door neighbor. I can’t not mention her adorable dog Jackie Chan – she was such a hoot to read about! I’ll admit that I thought I had the murderer pegged from the beginning, but I was quite wrong and that makes me happy. I don’t like books where it’s fairly obvious whodunit, so I was glad my early suspicions turned out wrong. I’m excited this is a series, and can’t wait to read the next one!

Thanks Kez. I figured snoemoe would know how to explain some of it (and indeed the student thing was mentioned above). I do have a couple of questions though.1) How can a club be affiliated to Scottish Labour and not the wider the party? Isn’t Scottish Labour simply a part of the whole (I only ask because I know Iain Gray isn’t Scottish LEADER but LOLITSP ).2) When you were a student, were you simply a student member, or were you a branch member too? Not knowing you that well but going on your party activism, I’d guess the latter. If that is a common story among students, then they would be counted in the branch figures as well, right? (And, presumably, get 2 votes one as an affiliate and one as a member but that’s another issue!).3) You say that the figures don’t include Labour clubs but that these people are members of the party . But isn’t that counter-intuitive? As in, if they are members of the party, they should be members of the party and allowed to vote?Internal democracy is so weird!
