Fab-U-Wish Launch

I saw something today that made me so excited I just had get on here and help spread the news! I was eating my dinner and watching E! News when I saw Giuliana Rancic introduce her latest venture, Fab-U-Wish, and my fork literally dropped and I ran to my laptop. Giuliana discovered she had breast cancer in her quest to get pregnant, with a pre-IVF mammogram showing she had early stages of cancer. Her journey was documented for her reality show with her husband Bill Rancic, Giuliana and Bill, and Giuliana was very vocal with her story, sharing each step of the way with the public. Now, healthy and also a mom to Baby Duke, Giuliana has teamed up with Lindsay Avner, who runs the fabulous company Bright Pink, to form Fab-U-Wish. Women under forty-five and who are undergoing treatment for breast and ovarian cancer can submit a wish to Fab-U-Wish and possibly have that granted! And Giuliana wants you to go all out with your wishes – a walk down the red carpet, designer shoes, lunch with celebrity – can you imagine? I just love this idea, and hope you will nominate someone you know – or maybe even you! All you have to do is submit a 150-word essay about why you want some fabulous in your life, and maybe you will get picked. Please head over to Fab-U-Wish for all the details, how you can help, and how to submit your essay. As someone whose life has been touched too much with cancer, I get so excited when I see things like this. Oddly enough, I have my “Fight Like a Girl” breast cancer T-shirt on today – how bizarre is that? Now go – make your wish!

That weekly winner will have their story published on Chick Lit Plus, and also be able to choose a book from my personal bookshelf. (I will email the available titles to winners). Penguin Group- Read Pink Press Release

PENGUIN GROUP (USA) IS IN THE PINK FOR
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
It’s time to think pink to shrink cancer

What’s black and white and pink all over? The initiative by the Penguin Group (USA) called Read Pink™ in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This literary embrace of a life-saving cause last year resulted in nearly 400,000 best-selling romances shipped with Read Pink seals and information about the charity it supports – the Breast Cancer Research Foundation®. In 2010 and 2011, some 12,000 floor displays also carried the Read Pink message. The result raised awareness for BCRF, the only cancer organization to receive A+ from the Institute for Philanthropy.

“We are delighted to be able to continue this initiative in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation for a second time. We hope that awareness for the Foundation’s work will only grow by bringing more attention to this important cause,” said Leslie Gelbman, President of Mass Market Publishing, Penguin Group (USA). To mark the occasion, Penguin Group (USA) is again making a $25,000 donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is very grateful to be part of Penguin’s Read Pink program again this year,” said Myra J. Biblowit, President, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “This visible initiative will certainly raise awareness about BCRF.”

The donation provides vital funds to support the mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. As Dr. Laura J. Esserman, director of the Carole Franc Buck Breast Cancer Center at the University of California at San Francisco said,. “[BCRF] awards support leaders in translational science and assume that they will be able to best dispense the funds. This is invaluable. Most grants require a year’s lead time before ideas can be funded. The BCRF funds allow you to plan ideas a few months ahead, and are flexible in support. The awards also come with the promise of continuity to explore new ideas as they arise. I also really appreciate the annual awards ceremony and the expression of thanks to the scientists. We don’t often get that and it really is rewarding and inspiring to see that people appreciate us, even if we don’t come up with all of the answers. It is an expression of thanks for the efforts we put forward to try to find answers.”

The novels chosen for Read Pink 2011 are eight bestselling mass market titles by some of Penguin Group (USA)’s most beloved female authors. Included this year are Nora Roberts, Catherine Anderson, Christina Dodd, Jillian Hunter, Lynn Kurland, Amanda Quick, Bertrice Small and Lauren Willig. More than 300,000 copies of the special editions will be printed featuring Read Pink seals on the covers. In addition, Penguin Group (USA) is including information in the back of each book in an effort to make readers aware of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and encourage them to become actively involved in supporting the organization.

CLP for Breast Cancer Awareness

A few weeks ago, I posted an article outlining a few ideas I had for October- which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I had some great feedback from that original article, so I am going to move forward with my plans. Big thanks to everyone who emailed me with their ideas and support!
First, I have posted a donate button on Chick Lit Plus through PayPal. I will be taking donations all throughout October that will go towards the Susan G. Komen organization. Second, I will personally be donating $1 for every review that is posted during the month of October for the Chick Lit Reading Challenge. And third, I am going to be running a month long contest that will feature your stories. I am looking for submissions that talk about your experiences with breast cancer. This is pretty open topic that can range from if you had breast cancer, a family member or a friend had cancer, what you do to support and find a cause, how you raise awareness, etc. This will be based on how many submissions I get, but I would like to choose a winning story each week. That story will be published on Chick Lit Plus, the weekly winners will be able to choose a book from my personal bookshelf that I will send to them, and each winner will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card. At the end of the month, I will write an article that will feature snippets from each story that was submitted.
So that is my plan for October! Please help spread the word about the submissions to your friends, families, and followers. I’m hoping we can get some inspiring stories that come in and I’m looking forward to October and doing my part. I will be posting a Call for Submissions post shortly with more information on the articles. Thanks again to everyone who gave their ideas and feedbacks!

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is a subject that is close to me, and each year I like to do something to bring awareness to the disease, which is the most common cancer among women in the US. This year, I knew I wanted to use my blog as some sort “platform,” but I wasn’t sure the best way to go about it. So, I’m doing this post to announce some of my ideas, and if anyone has any more, please suggest them! Or if anyone wants to team up together, holler at me! I’m open to any and all suggestions.
My first thought is tied with the Chick Lit Challenge that I host. For every review that is submitted for the challenge, I will donate $1 to the Susan G. Komen organization. Second, I will have a donation button up on Chick Lit Plus from early September to the end of October, and all donations that I receive will also go directly to the Susan G. Komen organization. These are two ideas that are pretty set in stone for me.
Another idea I was thinking about was doing some sort of contest, where women can submit articles to be published on Chick Lit Plus. The subjects could range from how breast cancer has affected you, to what you do to help find the cure. One story could be chosen each week and featured on CLP, and the ones who get chosen could win a prize- maybe a book?  If anyone wants to donate any sort of prizes to this, that would fantastic! Again, this is just an idea, not one I have decided on for sure, and I am hoping to get some feedback from all you lovelies that take the time to read my blog. If you have any other suggestions or comments, feel free to leave them below, or email me at Samantha@ChickLitPlus.com . Thanks everyone, hopefully this will be great and we can make it a yearly tradition!
