Randi M. Sherman is currently on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Paula Takes a Risk. MC Paula Tenenbaum is thirty-four, newly single and newly unemployed – all on the same day. The same man who fired her for being “average” is also the man who just dumped her. Paula thought a proposal was coming. What should have been one of the best times in Paula’s life now has become her worst. The doubts begin to creep in – is she too average, plain? Does she not try hard enough? It seems as though her life was slipping by, and Paula wasn’t doing enough to really enjoy it and find fulfillment. But all of that will change when her neighbor Larry comes to Paula for help. Larry, an egotistical, lazy douche-bag by all accounts, has a scheme that he needs to rope in naive Paula to help with. Paula, on a verge of a possible mid-life crisis, thinks this is a sign that she needs to turn her life around and finally take a risk. She dives head-first into business with Larry – but will her risk pay off?
When I first started the book, I thought it was moving too fast and that I was missing important information from the character’s lives. As the book progressed, I got a feel for Sherman’s writing and the speed of the book, and it quickly became a very engrossing read. It took me just a day to read about Paula and Larry, and I can say that I really enjoyed this book. Quick, sharp and the ending had me pumping my fist in the air. I enjoyed that the tale went back and forth between Paula and Larry, letting reader’s get a view from both perspectives. While I didn’t necessarily like Larry’s character, I didn’t dislike him enough to not want to read about him. I recommend this book for chick lit fans, especially if you are looking for a quick pick-me-up read.[Rating: 4.5]
