Sophie Reynard is a matchmaker born into an unfortunate set of circumstances. Her father will not claim her as his child, since she was a product of an affair. Her mother has long fled, but Sophie finds comfort in a close group of friends. She enjoys working as a matchmaker, being able to predict who should end up together based on her visions. But she becomes worried when she sees no one for herself. Will she be alone forever? On a trip to Venice, she meets Nicholas Tenbury, Marquess of Ancroft, but he does not divulge his real name and title. Sophie also hides who she really is, not wanting this gorgeous man to know of her shameful lineage. They experience a night of passion together, and Sophie thinks she will never see him again. But when the Marquess turns out to be friends with her close friends, they discover the truth about one another, and Nicholas is determined to be with Sophie. He loves her despite the fact she wasn’t born into wealth. But with so many obstacles in the way, Sophie thinks it will only be detrimental to Nicholas if she is with him. So she devises many plans to keep him away…though longing for his love at the same time.
One Night Scandal is a romance novel from Christie Kelley set in the Victorian Ages. In the beginning, I was really invested in the story, even though I usually read more contemporary books. But I thought it was interesting going back in time and I enjoyed Sophie’s character. But as the book progressed, I started feeling strained by Sophie. No matter how many times Nicholas told and showed her how much he cared and loved her, she seemed to continually want to sabotage herself. That seemed to drag the story along for me. But I did enjoy the other characters and their stories, and this book is part of a series that follows Nicholas and Sophie’s friends. I would be interested in checking those out, as I did enjoy Kelley’s writing. Not a favorite of mine, but a fun one to check out if you are interested in historical romances.
