the art of falling I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Summary:

One Wrong Step Could Send Her Over the Edge
All Penny has ever wanted to do is dance—and when that chance is taken from her, it pushes her to the brink of despair, from which she might never return. When she wakes up after a traumatic fall, bruised and battered but miraculously alive, Penny must confront the memories that have haunted her for years, using her love of movement to pick up the pieces of her shattered life.

Review:

The book starts with Penny waking up in the hospital. She is broken, bruised and has no memory of her accident.
While Penny is in the hospital, she becomes friends with her roommate, Angela, and Marty, the man who found her. Both Angela and Marty have suffered a loss and can relate to Penny’s frustration over her inability to move, much less dance.
Once Penny is out of the hospital they remain friends and continue to enrich eachother’s lives.
The Art of Falling touched on many topics including eating disorders, body image, chronic illness, friendships and death which made me feel so many emotions while reading. Most of all, I had to know what caused Penny to “fall” because I didn’t want to believe that she jumped during a moment of despair.
The book has great characters and it is a fantastic story. Although, it’s focus is on the life of a dancer, I think it would appeal to anyone.
