I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Chloe is the head of the finance department of a local university and lives with her boyfriend, Brian. In the three months she was away from her job, she went from 52 kilos (that’s 114 US pounds) to 58 kilos (128 pounds). Her world revolves around food. When she’s happy, she eats. When something good happens in her life, she eats to celebrate. When something bad happens, you guessed it…she tries to eat the pain away. Brian’s brother has a wedding coming up, and Chloe is stressed about the fact that she may not fit the ‘perfect’ girlfriend stereotype that his parents have said their boys need in their lives. She’s determined to lose weight before the wedding in order to gain the respect and admiration from her boyfriend’s parents. But with the attitude she has, Chloe sabotages her efforts with every turn.
When she tells her girlfriends that she & Brian never have sex and he hasn’t seen her naked in over a year, she tries to convince them that their relationship isn’t based on sex at all, and that all is well in her love life. But when Brian insists that she wear a certain dress that she wore last year (that knocked his socks off), Chloe is desperate to hide the fact that she can no longer fit in it
She is so consumed with the things she eats, she has pet names for them. For example, muffins are Jon Bon Jovi – because of his hair. George Clooney represents a honey waffle (appealing and sweet), vanilla cupcakes are Robert Pattinson (his pale complexion), and frosted doughnuts are Richard Gere (his gray hair).
At times, Chloe is funny about her attitude and love of food. We’ve all felt like that at some time in our lives. In that regard, “Eat Your Heart Out” was cute. I think it would have been a better story had it had more of a story involving characters who had….character. To me, too much of the story revolved around her weight – but I did enjoy the way the story played out and the ending.
