Book Review: In the Flo by Alisa Vitti

About the Book

The bestselling author of WomanCode presents a biohacking program for women, teaching them how to use their natural 28-day cycle to optimize their time, diet, fitness, work, and relationships.

Women have a important biological rhythm they experience every month that affects productivity, weight, sex drive, energy, and mood. It is essential to be aware of and take care of this rhythm, but it has been widely ignored by medical, nutrition and fitness research. So as women, we diet, we deprive, and we cram as much as possible into our day, striving to accomplish impossible to-do lists, and scheduling our lives based on a 24-hour time cycle, ignoring the intuitive time our bodies naturally keep: a monthly cycle with four hormonal phases that offer incredible advantages.

In the FLO presents a revolutionary 4-week solution to manage your energy and time according to your female biochemistry. By working with each phase, you’ll support your hormones, unlock peak creativity and performance, and avoid burnout. You’ll know exactly when to eat certain foods, clear your social calendar, or ask for a raise—and you’ll have the tools to do so, including:

·       Meal plans and recipes for each phase

·       Charts for phase-specific exercises, work tasks, and relationship activities

·       A daily planner that helps you align with your strengths in each phase

·       A biohacking toolkit for navigating period problems and hormonal birth control

My Review

Almost two years ago, I started struggling with eating, weight, fatigue and extreme brain fog. Eating even tiny meals made me feel sick, extremely bloated and full, yet the less I ate the more weight I was gaining. After gaining 30 pounds in less than 3 months, feeling so fatigued I just wanted to nap all day, and having such extreme brain fog to the point I was concerned about my safety, I knew something was very wrong. After being turned away by primary care doctors, internal medicine specialists and an OB-GYN, I finally had a friend refer me to a naturopathic doctor. She immediately ordered labs for me and we started to make sense of what was going on, one of the biggest being an extreme hormonal imbalance. I made it my mission to learn as much as I could about my hormones, cycle, and what things like food, lifestyle and exercise was doing to my body, mood, and mental health.

In sharing my journey on social media, I saw several comments recommending to read In the Flo, so I gave it a shot hoping to learn new information I could put into practice. What I didn’t expect was how many notes I would take. How many sections I would highlight. How many photos of pages I would take on my phone so I could quickly reference while going grocery shopping. But most importantly, how seen I felt while reading. How I didn’t feel like what was going on with my body was simply because I was a woman in my 30’s – something I was repeatedly told by doctors without even running a lab on me. I felt educated on my body and hormones, something I was not taught in school or in all of the doctor’s appointments I’ve been to – as a teenager being recommended birth control for cramps to a young woman struggling to get pregnant. This book was a wealth of information and tangible tips I could immediately start implementing.

I started to try cycle synching a few months into my journey with a naturopathic doctor, and I now have no PMS symptoms. To the point where the first couple months I thought I was going to miss my period because why was I not irritable and crampy? I slowly watched the number on the scale go down after going back to low-impact workouts that I love instead of heavy lifting and intense cardio that I was doing because I thought it would help me lose weight if I worked out two hours every day. I experimented more with food and cooking, and over time really changed up my diet to incorporate more vegetables and seeds, and stay away from refined sugar the best I can – a huge change from my previous sugar addiction I was embarrassed about. This book gave me the knowledge and the resources to understand my own body, to give me the confidence to ask questions to my doctors or even my friends, and to make small changes that are giving me big results.

Even if you are not struggling with hormones or your cycle, I still believe this book will be an incredible resource for you. I learned what I wish I was taught in school. I felt more empowered as a female, learning about our cycle and hormones and how we can use these to our benefit and the clues our own body gives us, if we just listen. I loved learning about cycle synching and best foods to eat when, but also even what our schedules could look like if we tapped into our 28 day hormone cycle instead of constantly trying to run on a 24 hour cycle that is best geared toward males. I am so happy I was recommended this book and I in turn want to do my part and recommend it to you.
