Book Review: In the Weeds by BK Borison

About the Book

A grumpy farmer and a no-nonsense social media influencer have another chance at love in this charming romantic comedy.

Evelyn St. James isn’t the kind of woman you forget. Beckett Porter certainly hasn’t. One incredible weekend in Maine, and he’s officially a man distracted. He’s not unfamiliar with hot and heavy flings, but Evie wove some sort of magic over him during their tumble in the sheets. He can’t stop thinking about her laugh. Her hand pressed flat against his chest. Her smiling mouth at his neck.

So when she suddenly appears on his farm as part of a social media contest, he is…confused. He had no idea that the sweet and sexy woman he met at a bar is actually a global phenomenon. When Evie disappears again, Beckett resolves to finally move on.

But Evie, who has been feeling disconnected from her work and increasingly dissatisfied with life online, is trying to find her way back to something real. She returns to the last place she was happy: Lovelight Farms and the tiny town of Inglewild. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the hot farmer she spent two incredible nights with.

My Review

I always get intrigued when I see a fictional main character as a social media influencer – my career of the last decade – because this seems pretty new in the literary world. I’ve also noticed a trend that when influencers are characters they are mainly cast as dumb, lazy or ditzy, so I had some trepidation saying yes to this review request. Instead, I was instantly pretty pleased to meet Evelyn St James, a content creator who isn’t feeling in sync with her career anymore. Again, something I can relate to. I started back in the blogging days when people had more of a drive to build a community and friendships, versus looking for fame and brand deals, and I can definitely say I don’t feel the same these days about a career I used to love. Evelyn decides to take a hiatus from social media and flee to the last place she felt any sense of happiness – Lovelight Farms located in the tiny town of Inglewild. Is it a coincidence this small town also houses Beckett Porter – a one night stand of Evelyn’s that she’s never quite forgotten about?

This is the second book in a series and while there were a few questions I had that would have been answered if I read the first, I overall found this pretty easy to jump into the plot. I didn’t always feel the chemistry between Beckett and Evelyn, so if you lean more on the side of romance, this might not be the best fit for you. While I can understand Beckett being fearful of Evelyn leaving, their fight mid-point through the book seemed to be more of a ‘we have to have a conflict’ than anything. I really enjoyed the small town setting, and getting an insight on burnout and how living a life online can take a toll on one’s mental health. While it wasn’t a favorite I still enjoyed it, and would be apt to pick up another book in the series if there is a third release.
