About the Book
A young, determined woman figures out life and love while staying true to herself in this whip-smart and genuinely witty debut.
Twenty-eight-year-old Hannah Spencer wants nothing more than to change everything about her life. After ten years of living in cities, Nathan Wild has just moved back home to Vermont and doesn’t want to change anything about his.
Recently laid off from her depressing job in Boston and ready for a challenge, Hannah heads to Vermont for the summer to take care of her sister’s kids and do some serious soul searching. There, against the stunning landscape of the Green Mountains, she embarks on an ambitious project: building a treehouse for her niece and nephew. As she hammers away, she formulates a plan to jump-start her life with a new job out West. But will Nathan-next-door complicate her desire to change course? A witty, romantic, and inspiring story of a young woman taking control and making tough choices about love and work to build the life she wants, The Treehouse on Dog River Road will have you rooting for Hannah every step of the way.
My Review
You know when you start reading a book and as you flip to page 3 you think, I’m going to like this … that’s how I felt about this one. I felt an instant connection to Hannah, who is finally starting to take control of her life and call all the shots after working a crummy job and living somewhere she didn’t truly enjoy. She is off to Vermont for a summer to watch her sister’s two kids and do some soul searching in her downtime. Where should she move next? What does she really want to do for work? And how can she positively impact society while doing so? I think that’s one thing I really loved about Hannah and the book in general – it was more than a rom com, and there were important issues touched on, especially environmental throughout the way. It was refreshing too that even once Hannah meets Nathan and understands she is falling for him, she won’t simply give up her career and her desired path of doing what’s best for her just for a guy. I am loving that more books are like that recently.
The relationship between Hannah and Nathan has some rocky starts and stops, but once the two finally put their guards down, you can tell they are meant to be. But is it a right person, wrong time type of situation? I adored Hannah’s niece and nephew, and of course Nathan’s dog plays a huge role in the book as well. This was such a well-rounded story with fleshed out characters, engaging storylines and some fun plot twists to keep you invested until the last page. Highly enjoyed and a sparkling summer read.
