Book Review: The Wake Up Call by Beth O’Leary

About the Book

Two hotel receptionists—and arch-rivals—find a collection of old wedding rings and compete to return them to their owners, discovering their own love story along the way.

It’s the busiest season of the year, and Forest Manor Hotel is quite literally falling apart. So when Izzy and Lucas are given the same shift on the hotel’s front desk, they have no choice but to put their differences aside and see it through.

The hotel won’t stay afloat beyond Christmas without some sort of miracle. But when Izzy returns a guest’s lost wedding ring, the reward convinces management that this might be the way to fix everything. With four rings still sitting in the lost & found, the race is on for Izzy and Lucas to save their beloved hotel—and their jobs.

As their bitter rivalry turns into something much more complicated, Izzy and Lucas begin to wonder if there’s more at stake here than the hotel’s future. Can the two of them make it through the season with their hearts intact?

My Review

If you love a good enemies-to-lovers rom com, this is a good pick for you. Izzy and Lucas, two hotel receptionists, have never seen eye to eye, but take it to the next level after finding a collection of old wedding rings. The wedding rings could be what saves the Forest Manor Hotel from having to shut down – and saves both of the their jobs – and Izzy and Lucas create a contest over who can find the rings originals owners – and get a handsome monetary reward for them – the quickest. There is plenty of bickering, miscommunication, and heated moments to carry us through the pages. Izzy has a potential love interest that threatens her growing interest in Lucas, and Lucas has too much pride to succumb and be candid with his feelings towards Izzy. The chemistry between the two is unavoidable, and with a mix of quirky secondary characters, a race to save a hotel, and some interesting plot twists with the wedding rings along the way, this is a cheery laid-back rom com that will keep you smiling.
