Book Review: Twelve Hours in Manhattan by Maan Gabriel

About the Book

Two worlds. One heart. Twelve hours.

Bianca Maria Curtis is at the brink of losing it all when she meets Eric at a bar in Manhattan. Eric, as it turns out, is the famous Korean drama celebrity Park Hyun Min, and he’s in town for one night to escape the pressures of fame. From walking along Fifth Avenue to eating ice cream at Serendipity to sharing tender moments on top of the Empire State building, sparks fly as Bianca and Eric spend twelve magical hours far away from their respective lives. In that time, they talk about the big stuff: love, life, and happiness, and the freedom they both seek to fully exist and not merely survive.

But real life is more than just a few exhilarating stolen moments in time.

As the clock strikes the twelfth hour, Bianca returns back to the life she detests to face a tragedy that will test her strength and resolve—and the only thing she has to keep going is the memory of a man she loves in secret from a world away.

My Review

I was intrigued by this book from the beginning because it seemed like a very usual meet-cute scene right off the bat. Bianca, on the brink of losing everything meets Eric at a bar in Manhattan – who is suave and secure. But right when I think I know what will happen next, there is a pretty intense plot twist that had me raising my eyebrows. I like to be surprised when reading, especially rom coms that can get a bit predictable, so I settled in to enjoy the ride. I thought it was interesting that the storyline stretched out over a longer period of time – really showing Bianca trying to put the pieces of her shattered life back together without help from a potential love interest. And when the two finally meet again, it had a more authentic feel to it, and I was very curious to see where a relationship would take them.

The plot point of Eric actually being a famous celebrity and Bianca … well, not … gave some depth to the chapters, especially because of Eric’s resistance of “playing the part” of an actor. He really did seem to want a normal life, and one with Bianca. I enjoyed their romance, up until when Bianca had to step in at the premiere. I could not understand that entire storyline, why Bianca was involved the way she was, why everyone was mad, what happened between Eric and Bianca. I was actually going back and re-reading scenes trying to figure out where I was going wrong but I just didn’t get it. I was happy with the ending, but with so many question marks right before it was a little off-putting. Still a cute concept, I loved all the NYC scenes but not quite a favorite.
