#BookReview: Mom Genes by Hilary Grossman

About the Book

Big Little Lies meets Class Mom

The meddling moms of Forest River live for a good scandal. Speculation surrounding Claire Conroy’s sex life has fueled the rumor mill for years. Now, when Claire returns home from a trip to Italy separated from her husband of thirteen years, the imaginations of the Lululemon-clad ladies’ who lunch spin into overdrive. As the gossipmongers create their own scandalous backstory for the separation, blaming Claire’s infidelity, she learns the hard way just how mean mommies can be.

Eager to begin her new life as a single mom of three Claire puts her trust in Jackie Martin, the president of the PTA, to help tell her truth and free her of the false accusations and scandal. But the plan backfires, and Claire is put further into the spotlight when an embarrassed mom declares war.

As Claire dusts off her resume, fights the daily urge not to strangle her ex-husband and his new girlfriend, and dips her toes into the dating world one dud at a time will she find the happiness she craves or succumb to the pressure of the mean girls?

My Review

I was a big fan of Go On, Girl from Hilary Grossman, that first introduced us to the PTA moms of Forest River. I also do consider Hilary a friend, and have known her for years and also worked with her on past novels. I had a feeling she would deliver another fun one with Mom Genes, and I was right. Scandals, broken friendships and fighting through social media is the name of the game for this group. This story focuses on Claire and her recent separation from her husband. Already struggling with shielding her children from their now lackluster father and trying to build up her resume to get a new job, she also must deal with incessant chatter about if she’s moving on – and who she’s moving on with.

Some of the scenarios definitely made my eyebrows go up, and felt offended for Claire time and time again while reading her story. Just like in the first book though, I really appreciated the theme of friendships and helping others through a hard time, and I was rooting for Claire to get a happy ending. There were plenty of moments that kept me on my toes also – I appreciated that Grossman could add in those throughout the story to keep it from being more predictable. I’m really hoping we get a book from Jackie Martin’s POV, and I’m looking forward to more from this mom group!
