About the Book
You’re riding in
your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you
have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, “You are going to
die.”
Just as self-driving cars become the trusted, safer norm,
eight people find themselves in this terrifying situation, including a faded TV
star, a pregnant young woman, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal
immigrant, a husband and wife, and a suicidal man.
From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast
to millions of people around the world. But the public will show their true
colors when they are asked, “Which of these people should we save?…And
who should we kill first?”
My Review
You know that emoji of a face that has really wide eyes … that was me reading The Passengers. When I first started the story and began to understand the time this is set in – fully self-driving cars and really where technology rules the world – I was intrigued yet uncomfortable at the same time. During a live chat I had on Youtube, we discussed this book and why it was discomfiting to think of a time where we did give in to technology and let it begin to control us, instead of the other way around. It was actually pretty easy for me to envision this world that John Marrs created.
I want to say in my review that this book will not be for everyone because it does include some truly horrifying moments. At one point, my stomach was turning so badly I had to take a break from reading. But the concept behind this book and the fast-paced storyline kept me wanting to read more. The ending wasn’t quite what I was imagining as we moved along, but it was an interesting way to wrap up this tale. I do highly recommend the story, just want to be clear in my warning that if you can’t handle graphic moments you might want to sit this one out. But I found this book incredibly thought-provoking and chilling to imagine this world might be closer than we think.
