#BookReview: The Secret Mother by Shalini Boland

About the Book

‘Are you my mummy?’

Tessa Markham returns home to find a child in her kitchen. He thinks she’s his mother. But Tessa doesn’t have any children.

Not anymore.

She doesn’t know who the little boy is or how he got there.

After contacting the police, Tessa is suspected of taking the mystery child. Her whole life is turned upside down. And then her husband reveals a secret of his own…

Tessa isn’t sure what to believe or who to trust. Because someone is lying. To find out who, she must confront her painful past. But is the truth more dangerous than Tessa realises?

An absolutely unputdownable psychological thriller with a twist that will make you wonder if you can ever trust anyone again. If you loved Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and The Sister this book will have you hooked.

My Review

Oh. Oh my. I kind of want to start at the end of the book to kick off this review, because – oh. I like to think I’m a pretty savvy reader, and majority of the time books don’t surprise me these days and I can see plot twists coming, so it’s pretty fun when a story line can catch me off guard. And this book caught me off guard in a big way, and I loved it. Backing up to the start of the story, it’s clear that Tessa is not doing well. Still in pain from losing a child and her marriage falling apart, it was easy to feel empathy for Tessa but also worry about her well-being, especially when a strange child ends up in her kitchen. I got pulled into her world quickly and read just as fast because I wanted answers to all the questions that kept popping up. And again – the ending gave me chills. Highly recommend The Secret Mother if you are in the mood for a thought-provoking psychological thriller!
