Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast-Cancer-Ribbon1October has been breast cancer awareness month. Pink has popped up everywhere, from the grocery stores, makeup counters, and even the NFL. But raising awareness doesn’t have to stop just because the calendar has rolled over. Whether you have personally been affected by the disease, known someone who has, or just want to offer your support; there is something for everybody to fight for a cure.

There are multiple companies, foundations, and website’s that donate to funding for breast cancer research. One of the most well known is the Susan G. Koman for the Cure. The website offers so many great things, such as making donations, signing up for events, and even learning how to become an advocate. Then of course is the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. This website has great tools about breast cancer, early detection and prevention, and how to help the foundation. There is even a ‘donate a mammogram’ tool. The average cost of a mammogram is $100.00, and with a donation of this amount (or any monetary amount), NBCF will donate that money to uninsured women who cannot afford mammograms. How great is that?

I lost my own grandmother this past July to breast cancer, and watching her fight through the disease for over a year made such an impact on my life. I have donated money through the Susan G. Koman website, participated in events where the proceeds are donated to breast cancer research, and is  sure to spread the word about early detection to everyone I can. Every bit counts.
