Healthy Lifestyle Choices

There was an article on my local news website today that sparked my interest. Carbonated beverages have been seeing a decline since 2005, and last year it fell to the lowest it’s been since 1996. The article states without energy drinks such as Monster and Red Bull, the decline would have been even steeper. I think this is great! My last soda was in mid-January, and I challenged myself not to drink one while doing Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred Challenge in February. Then came Lent, and my fiancé and I decided to give up soda together, so I just continued on not drinking it. I know Lent ends this weekend, but I’m happy to report that I really am no longer craving the caffeine, nor have I experienced any crazy headaches like I have in the past when I’ve tried cutting out soda. Will I continue to not drink it? I know that I will definitely be cutting way back, but I’m not sure I will totally cut it out. I believe everything is okay in moderation, but I was not applying that rule to soda before January. I know now that I can stay away from pop for months at a time and be just fine, and I want to try to continue on with that healthy choice. Has anyone else recently gave up soda, or done another healthy lifestyle change? I would love to hear about it!

Beauty Review: Ulta Eyeliner & Mascara

I have been buying my makeup lately from Ulta. It’s a giant store, they have good prices, and they have a reward program, which I love. I also get a coupon from them every month in the mail, so why not? On one of my last trips there they were having a buy one get one half off sale for Ulta beauty products. I grabbed a mascara and eyeliner, and decided to check them out.
The verdict? I like the eyeliner more, but it’s not up to par with the usual Maybelline that I try on. It wears off too quickly, and if I’m going out I have to put it in my clutch so I can reapply it after a few hours. The mascara I really wasn’t a fan of. I have since stopped using it, because I don’t notice anything. No length, no volume, nada. So I don’t think I’ll be picking up the Ulta brand anymore, even if they are having a great sale!

Celebrity Split: Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough

I’m actually bummed out about this celebrity breakup! People.com is reporting that multi-tasker Ryan Seacrest and dancer turned actress Julianne Hough have decided to throw in the towel on their two year relationship. Dang it! A source “close to the couple” is saying that the reason for the split is simply due to busy work schedules. Well shucks. I’m off to Dairy Queen.

Mothers don’t need another “how to” book on parenting. What they need is to know they’re not the only ones who stand on the supermarket check-out line engaging total strangers in potty training horror stories.

You’ll find plenty of books, relatives and friends who are happy to tell you what you’re doing wrong as a mother. Cookies for Dinner is the antidote to all that! Pam Johnson-Bennett and Kae Allen are two mothers who reveal their imperfections and embarrassments through a series of hilarious true stories.

And, let’s not forget the appropriate technique for removing a crow that is found sitting on the diaper pail while you’re changing your infant’s diapers (hint… don’t use your child’s butterfly net) and how a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit can cause a pregnant woman to do strange things.

What do moms need? Laughter and the comfort of knowing you’re not alone on this roller coaster ride of motherhood. Consumed by grief and clinging to her belief that her family is still alive, she sets out to find them. But as disturbing clues begin to surface, Abby realizes that the truth may be far more sinister than she imagined. Soon she finds herself caught in a current of lies that threaten to unhinge her and challenge everything she once believed about her marriage and family.

With a voice that resonates with stunning clarity, Barbara Taylor Sissel delivers a taut and chilling mystery about a mother’s love, a wife’s obsession and the invisible fractures that can shatter a family.

Synopsis: Six years have passed since Jake Sanders watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd.

But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for…but she is not Natalie. Whoever the mourning widow is, she’s been married to Todd for almost two decades, and with that fact everything Jake thought he knew about the best time of his life—a time he has never gotten over—is turned completely inside out.

As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can’t be found, or don’t remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake’s search for the woman who broke his heart, who lied to him, soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on a carefully constructed fiction.

Harlan Coben once again delivers a shocking page-turner that deftly explores the power of past love, and the secrets and lies that such love can hide.

Baby Talk: 9 Months Old

Ethan will officially be 9 months old this upcoming Tuesday (the 26th) and it hit me a few days ago that I need to start planning his first birthday party. Holy cow, right? When did this little guy become almost a whole year old?

Ethan 8.5 months 2Let’s see, so what has Ethan been up to? Absolutely everything! It is crazy to think about all of the things that he can do now vs. what he could do a month ago. Ethan is VERY mobile these days. He is standing and shuffling along items and I know that it is only a few weeks until he will be full on walking. Crazy, right? Another key milestone, the little guy has been sleeping really, really well. In the past two weeks I’ve actually had to wake him up a few times for school, which I’ve never had to do his whole life. I sure have been enjoying it though!

Here are a few updates about life at 9 months:

Food: My boy is an still quite an EATER! There really isn’t anything new with this one, but we are about to start introducing a few new foods and I will probably have a big update next month about how he does with it all.

Favorite Toys: Ethan has been really big into playing with empty bottles, empty containers and pretty much anything that isn’t actually a toy. He also has quite the fondness for books. Maybe he is used to always seeing mommy with a book in hand that he now favors them as well. I’m definitely not complaining.

Things we’ve left behind: Pretty much any and all props, we haven’t used his swing in weeks.

Teeth: Still none. But, he’s had a fluctuating fever all week and tons of drool, so we might have one on the horizon.

Ethan V-DayFavorite activities: Standing, Letting go of things to work on his balance, Crawling, playing, eating, story time, walks, going to the playground and ANYTHING outdoors.

Daycare: Still loves it. One of his teachers has quite the soft spot for him.

Height/Weight: Oh goodness. Not entirely sure but he is big!
