Midnight Promises by Sherryl Woods

Midnight Promises by Sherryl Woods is the first in the Sweet Magnolia’s triology. This book follows Elliott Cruz, who first courted struggling single mom, Karen Amex, years ago. Now a few years into their marriage, their colliding dreams threaten to tear them apart. Elliott wants to pursue a business opportunity using their “baby money” and that causes issues with Karen due to her financial insecurities. Lack of communication, tension, personal issues, and secrets make things difficult, and unsure how to handle conflicting interests, things become tense quickly between the two … but it isn’t until they find out about an affair close to home that their issues are put into perspective and don’t seem so damning after all. Will they be able to work through their differences?

Sherryl beautiful conveys what life is like inside most marriages: life gets busy, spouses lose touch with one another, and things get in the way …. and I love how she handled their conflict and the resolution. I feel like most of the time in books, marriages are made out to be either completely disastrous or similar to a fairy tale, when for most people, they are right in between. I also really liked the secondary plot line (well, as much as one can when it deals with an extramarital affair) and how Elliott and Karen use her marriage crisis to really see what they have right in front of them. Midnight Promises is a wonderful read and Sherryl does a fantastic job at creating very in depth characters and a very believable story line. Overall, a really great read.

The Gaggle by Jessica Massa

The Gaggle by Jessica Massa is partially a self-help book, partially a humorous read that will keep you entertained until the last page. This book asks the question that no one wants to answer, “who cares if he’s just not that into you?” And instead of offering you simple solutions on how to break into the dating world, it shows you what you’ve been missing that has been right in front of your eyes the whole time … your GAGGLE. Incase you aren’t familiar, a gaggle is a term that replies to every type of man that you encounter in your world because dating is simply, no longer dating like it used to be. This book teaches you to look at your co-workers, their friends, college friends, old friends, an ex, and the list goes on and on and on. This book shows you that you have so much more going on in your life than you are giving yourself credit for and that some of your current relationships may actually be “the one” hidden in disguise.

I really, really enjoyed reading The Gaggle by Jessica Massa. I feel like it takes the self-help books of the dating world and knocks them on their ass, and although it is humorous in its descriptions of the men out there, it is pretty accurate in describing the lack of dating in todays world. It’s easy to feel like your love life is nonexistent and I have girlfriends who get so wrapped up in who and when their next date will be that they forget to see what is right in front of them. Overall, this was a very fun, helpful, honest portrayal of the dating scene today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to my single girlfriends for guidance and those who are current committed for a good laugh.

Dewitched by EL Sarnoff

EL Sarnoff is currently on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Dewitched. Oh my word. This was one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. I loved every second of it, and will be snapping up the sequel as soon as it comes out! I was a huge fan of fairy tales and especially all the beautiful Disney princesses as a girl – and still am! From ages 21-25 I have been Cinderella, Snow White, Jasmine and Belle for Halloween, so clearly I never grew up! But enough about me, let’s get back to this book! Dewitched follows the life of the Evil Witch who tried to poison Snow White – after she did the poisoning. She gets thrown in jail for attempted murder and then to rehab – for evil addicts! The Evil Queen AKA Jane Yvel runs into Cinderella’s evil stepsisters, Captain Hook and more of the evil-goers from the beloved fairy tales in her quest to become un-evil.
I loved every second of this book. It was hilarious to read about the Queen being in rehab, and so much fun to read about the characters who would pop up – from Ariel and Ursula to Fiona from Shrek! I also loved the tweak on businesses – Barons and Noble, how awesome is that?! Sarnoff was creative with her plot, characters and overall concept – even though it is based on stories, it felt completely original to me. I cannot for Unhitched (being released October 2012) to be on sale and dive back into these fairy tales. A must-read!

Showbiz by Ruby Preston

Ruby Preston is currently on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Showbiz. I can’t say I have ever been a real big Broadway fan. I have attended a Broadway show many years ago on a high school trip, but that is about my extent of it. But I was excited to read about a subject that I didn’t know much about, getting an insider’s behind the scenes look, and possibly learn a few new things. Well – this book was a hit for me! Preston really knocked it out of the park with drama, mystery and a cast of characters that made this book the delight it was.
MC Scarlett Savoy has been slaving for years as an under-appreciated apprentice to the “King of Broadway.” Her ruthless boss shows no mercy and will do whatever it takes to come out on top. Scarlett finds out that he might be paying off critics to rave about his shows, and wonders if she can continue to work for him – or if it’s finally time to break out on her own. At the same time, she happens to meet influential gossip columnist and sparks fly – but is he interested in Scarlett the woman, or is he more interested in her job and the story it could provide? Add in a suicide, over the top Broadway characters (on and off the stage) and complicated love lives, and you have yourself a winner!
This book flowed effortlessly for me, and I blinked in confusion when I came to the end. It went so fast! A true page-turner, and it thrilled me to be exposed to something I previously had very little knowledge on. A novel that is full of theatrics, from the characters to the scenarios, this is one for you to check out!

Road Apples by Karen Kennedy Samoranos

Road Apples by Karen Kennedy Samoranos follows Madeline Benites post breakup with Jake. Distraught and upset, she decides to take a road trip, and although it starts off bad, it ends very nicely when she falls into the arms of Wyatt McLain after a mugging. Despite a significant age difference, they have an instant connection and soon enough, Madeline discovers that she is pregnant. The two decide to start a life together but something horrific happens to Madeline on the night before her move. Will she be able to move on and move past it? Or is this fate’s way of testing her and telling her that she is living her life all wrong?

I found the relationship dynamic between Madeline and Wyatt to be heartwarming and really light and airy. Their age difference is interesting, but given their personalities, there seems to be a much larger gap than just a number. I enjoyed the story … but found several parts to be unrealistic. I found her profession difficult to believe and I also found a few scenes between Madeline and Wyatt hard to imagine. But, overall, a light story that tells of a young woman running from a broken heart, trying her past to move on, and hopelessly falling in love with an older, gentler man.

Bittersweet by Francine Pascal

I just finished the sixth and final installment of The Sweet Life, the new eSeries from Francine Pascal. Bittersweet wrapped up the tales of Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield and their gang of friends. Pascal offered readers a glimpse into their lives at the age of thirty, and I enjoyed this series. Book six is tying up the loose ends. Readers will find out whether Bruce Patman is guilty or innocent of the charges being pressed against him, whether Jessica and Todd will be able to reunite, and how Lila’s fake pregnancy/real pregnancy works out. While I enjoyed the series, I was a bit confused by the ending of the sixth book. It ended in the cliffhanger fashion I had come to expect from the previous books but…what happens next? Will there be more books to help explain the cliffhanger, carry on the stories, or are readers just supposed to take a gander themselves at what happened? I’m not sure and I’m a bit confused. I was also thrown off by the Liam twist – I can’t say I could tell from the previous books that his tale would end the way it did, and I thought it came out of nowhere and was probably only used for shock value. So while I enjoyed the first five books, the sixth left me a bit unsettled. I wish as readers and loyal fans we could have seen more of a resolution.

Ripple the Twine by Jenn Flynn-Shon

Jenn Flynn-Shon is on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Ripple the Twine. Sara Quinn, a sportswriter, is invested in her career and earning the respect she knows she deserves. While being focused on her writing and sports, she decides she needs a much needed break from the dating world. But just when she decides to give her love life a timeout, she is introduced to Ben – and she starts to question her self-imposed break. But around that same time, her friends start to go through some difficult situations, and Sara wants to be there for them. She spends so much time worrying about her friends that she doesn’t have time anymore for Ben – but in the process of helping, she also finds healing. Learning to come to grips with her emotional past, Sara finds the strength and support from herself and her friends, and finally thinks she finds the path to happiness.
I’m big sports fan, and I actually used to work at a hockey arena, so I’m always up for a hockey story! I really enjoyed the hockey lingo that is mentioned before each chapter, even though I thought I knew a lot about the game, I learned even more while reading! I liked Sara’s character and how she was so quick to help her friends, and the supporting cast was just as fun to read about. Sometimes I thought the story was a bit too telling and not enough showing, and there was a lot of “Sara did this” “Sara did that” moments that were a bit distracting to me, but overall I enjoyed this debut novel!
