Book Review: A Place For Us by Liza Gyllenhaal

I received a copy of A Place For Us by Liza Gyllenhaal in exchange for an honest review. This is a captivating and beautifully written novel that will draw readers in from the beginning. We meet Brook Bostock and her family – husband Michael, son Liam and daughter Tilly. Brook comes from a prominent family and is extremely wealthy, but never likes to flaunt that fact. She wants to be accepted into the community as a normal family, but her happy existence is shattered when a teenage girl is assaulted in their home. Lawsuits are brought up, the town is giving the cold shoulder to the Bostock’s, and Brooke is wondering how to keep her family – and her marriage- together.
I enjoyed this book because of how complex this situations are, yet how effortless it was to follow along and be drawn into the story. It is teenagers we are dealing with, and while sometimes I just wanted to scream for the truth to come out, I could understand with all the emotions they were feeling. I actually felt sick to my stomach when it came to one father in this book; his actions were downright horrendous. There are a lot of questions that arise, including moral questions that I asked myself along the way. This was a book that I wanted to tell people about, to get their opinion on what they would do and how they would handle a situation, and that is what makes this book a true favorite of mine.

Book Review: The Girls’ Guide to Love and Supper Clubs …

I received a copy of The Girls’ Guide to Love and Supper Clubs by Dana Bate in exchange for an honest review. What a terrific read! From page one I was hooked into Hannah Sugarman’s life. She works in a think tank in Washington, D.C., lives in a gorgeous apartment with her handsome boyfriend, and can be just as successful as her academic parents. Problems: she hates her job, her boyfriend won’t accept her as who she is, and she doesn’t want to be a professor like her parents – she wants to cook. Hannah has a dream of running an underground supper club, just another item her and her boyfriend disagree about. But when the inevitable breakup happens, Hannah decides to do what she wants for once – try to have a cooking career.
This book had me laughing, cringing, and cheering for Hannah all the way throughout. When she starts using her new landlord’s apartment as the location for her supper club I just wanted to wave my hands in the air and yell, “Danger!” But of course, the book wouldn’t have been as much fun if that didn’t happen. Hannah is down-to-earth, a loveable main character, and someone who I wanted to find happiness. I really enjoyed the romance in this book, and it actually might have been my favorite part. Right away, I thought I knew who Hannah would end up with. Then my mind changed. And then changed again. And then again. I love that! I’m also a big fan of foodie books, so with all the menu-planning, grocery-buying, and underground supper clubbing that was happening, I sure was happy. A 5 star book!

Book Review: The Good Daughter by Jane Porter

I received a copy of The Good Daughter by Jane Porter in exchange for an honest review. I fell in love with the first book in the Brennan Sisters series, The Good Woman, and was anxiously awaiting this book to land in my mailbox. This novel focuses on Kit Brennan, a Catholic school English teacher who has recently broken up with her boyfriend of ten years to find true happiness. With her fortieth birthday looming on the calendar and no man in sight (after some horrendous online dating attempts) Kit evaluates what she really wants in life – a child of her own. But will her close-knit family be open to Kit going it by herself? When Kit is on a girls’ weekend she meets Mr. Wrong – but for some reason can’t push him out of her head. When a situation at school thrusts him back into her life, Kit wonders if her normally safe route is about to be shattered.
Another 5 star book! Just like with the first, I hated each time I had to put this down. I found myself literally breathless from time to time while reading, wondering what was in store for the characters. The Brennan family is so fascinating to read about, but it was heartbreaking to watch the mother struggle in her fight with cancer. It looks like Sarah’s story is coming next with the release of The Good Wife in September 2013, and once again I will be on pins and needles waiting for that one!

Book Review: Neurotically Yours by Bonnie Trachtenberg

I received a copy of Neurotically Yours by Bonnie Trachtenberg is exchange for an honest review.
Summary:
Smart, attractive, and ambitious, thirty-seven-year-old Dara Harrison is, nonetheless, still single—and on sabbatical from dating. Ironically Los Angeles’ most renowned relationship advice columnist, Dara has become a Southland sensation with her “tell-it-like-it-is” approach to the mating game.

Parlaying her success into a new business, Dara launches a revolutionary dating service geared for the perennially single and romantically challenged. Its no-holds-barred theme soon makes the company a roaring success, even catapulting Dara onto the national talk show scene—until, of course, it all backfires.

With her company under threat and a publicity stunt gone haywire, Dara is forced to join the ranks of her lonely heart clientele, and suddenly realizes that saving the business she cherishes, means facing her lifelong fears—and maybe even falling in love again.

Witty, poignant, and immensely engaging, this romantic comedy from the bestselling author of Wedlocked: A Novel features sparkling dialogue, colorful characters, and a story that pulls you in and never lets you go.
Review:
I loved this book! It only took me a day to read because it is fast-paced, funny, and I had to see how it ended. Dara is a great MC, a smart woman with a large vocabulary that will make you laugh, and someone that thinks she doesn’t need a man to complete. It’s quite funny that she is a relationship advice columnist, and then goes on to create an online dating service. I liked the intrigue in her relationships, and wondered how they would end. Her cat, Mallory, is such a star in this book! There is humor, love, sadness, quirky characters, and a happy ending that will make chick lit lovers highly enjoy this book. One for your shelves!

Book Review: Bella Summer Takes a Chance by Michele Gorman

I received a copy of Bella Summer Takes a Chance by Michele Gorman in exchange for an honest review. Gorman is one of my favorite chick lit writers and I enjoy her books. This one was no different, and it was a quick read that I laughed throughout. Bella, or B., is the main character, who breaks up with her long-time boyfriend after realizing she loves him but isn’t in love with him, and starts taking more chances in her life. She tries to revive her singer career and find her Mr. Right, all while juggling her social life and hilarious cast of friends.
Bella Summer Takes a Chance is a well-written novel that is highly entertaining from page one and throughout. I loved Bella as a heroine because she finally realizes that she needs to take chances in life and won’t let anyone or anything bring her down. Her story is empowering and I absolutely love that in my reads. This book is also big on comedy. I had a hoot with Bella’s ex, her pregnant friend, and especially the adorable Marjorie. Filled with quirky characters and a lovely wrap up at the end, this is one for chick lit fans to read!

CLP Blog Tours Book Review: Confessions of an Alli Cat …

Courtney Cole is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Confessions of an Alli Cat. OMG – this is one funny book. And a bit on the dirty side, but still super hilarious. The MC is thirty-five year-old Allison “Alli” Lancaster, who is living a great life. She has money, a fab job, a terrific daughter, a great bestie and a killer house in Las Vegas. Alli is happily single after divorcing her cheating ex-husband, but her best friend Sara thinks it’s time to spice up her life. What does that entail? A sex toy, a bikini wax and – hiring a much younger gigolo to satisfy her like she’s never been satisfied before. Alli is enjoying her new life until a man that could be something serious comes along – and a whole new can of worms is opened.
This book is a must-read and one of my favorites so far this year! Fast-paced, witty, a bit raunchy and oh so scandalous! I loved being surprised by the twists that Cole sprinkled in, and I found myself telling all my girlfriends about this book and how they must get their own copy. This is definitely an R-rated read but so worth it in my opinion!

CLP Blog Tours Book Review: Mad World: Sanctuary by Samaire …

Samaire Provost is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Mad World: Sanctuary. This book is the follow-up to Mad World: Epidemic, a book I surprisingly loved. I say surprisingly because I’m not a big fan of zombies and that is the focus of this series, but I was hooked from the beginning. Sanctuary picks up a couple years after the Black Plague infection swept through the United States and the gang – Alyssa, Jacob, DeAndre, Caitlyn, Risa and new addition Luke – are still just trying to survive. While survival is the main focus, protecting five year old Luke (who was born as his mother was turning into a zombie) from scientists who are trying to find a cure for the infection is a big issue as well. The odds seem against them, but can continue to survive?
Ooh, this book gave me the chills. My fiancé is a big fan of all the zombie shows, so I enjoyed talking to him about these books. There is one part in the book with a farmer couple that really got a rise out of both me and him, and was really surreal to think about. Again the writing was fast-paced and there was action on every page. Just like in Epidemic there is a cliff-hanger, and that makes me really anxious to get to the next books! I know there are two more set to come out, and I will be anxiously waiting for them!
