Patricia is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Is This All There Is?
35 year old Beth works a few evenings at the local university as a communications professor. She’s happily married to her high school sweetheart, and is the mother to two young boys. From the outside, she’s got a perfect life. That is, until she realizes what is missing from it. After an evening out with her longtime friend, they end up going dancing. After a few too many drinks, loud music and no kids/husband, she runs into a few of her previous students, and starts a casual conversation with them, one in particular – Dave, a 21 year old who later tells her that he fell in love with her when he was her student. Beth is blown away by Dave – from his apple-scented hair to the dimple in his cheek. As the conversation continues, so does the “innocent” flirting. As time goes on, the attraction proves to be overwhelming for both Beth and Dave. Moving on their emotions, the begin to secretly meet and talk, and before she realizes what she’s done, she’s in love with another man.
Beth begins to see all that is wrong in what she thought was a perfect marriage. Her husband doesn’t kiss her, hold her or talk to her like Dave does. It all spirals out of control, and before she realizes it, Dave has started consuming her thoughts. She is startled to find that her old friends can’t support her cheating lifestyle, so she seeks new friends for confirmation that her innocent flirting won’t hurt anyone – but as time goes on, Beth is made to choose between what she has, and what she could have with a much younger man – a man that drives her wild. She comes to realize that she has her own needs, both outside and away from her children…and all that is lacking in her marriage. Can it be found with a much younger man? Temptations and all the perfect words from a handsome suitor serves too much – and she is eventually forced to choose between two men. Will she risk her own happiness to be society’s idea of the perfect mom? Or will she realize that there is, indeed, more to it than bottles, diapers, and an unhappy marriage? Is there a way to have both?
Is This All There Is – we’ve all asked ourselves this same question at one time or another. Well written and quick moving, Ms. Mann tackles what every middle-aged, married, mother has always wondered.
