Beauty Review: Biore Pore Minimizing Lightweight Moisturizer

I have been trying out the Biore line, especially the pore minimizes, since that is a big problem that I have. When it came time to buy new moisturizer, I decided to try the Pore Minimizing Lightweight Moisturizer with SPF ($20). I really liked this product, it went on smoothly, smelled nice, and I think it did help control my large pores. The reason why I wouldn’t use it again is because it’s really not all that lightweight. After I would apply it, it would feel super heavy on my face, and I would have to wait 10-15 minutes before I even attempted to put on my makeup. But it worked well for days that I went makeup free, and could just throw some on and have the added bonus of a sunscreen built right in. Overall, good product, but not a favorite for me. It looks like this product is going to be discontinued anyways, so I’m glad I didn’t fall in love with. And I’ve been having pretty good luck with Biore, but they discontinue products so fast that I think I will try a new brand next. I would hate to get my heart set on something only to learn it’s no longer available!

Cat in a Vegas Gold Vendetta by Carole Nelson Douglas

Well, I’m never a fan of giving unfavorable reviews, nor am I a fan of not finishing books. Unfortunately, this is what has happened when I attempted to read Cat in a Vegas Gold Vendetta by Carole Nelson Douglas. I usually write a little synopsis of the story to start off my reviews, but I’m not quite sure what to type here. There is a cat that is a detective and chats with other stray cats, a PR whiz that somehow turns into a detective, an ex-fiancée with no memory, and an actress with a kooky aunt. The actress hires Temple Barr to act as the detective and track down who killed her aunt’s handyman, and the cats help out. But then Temple has issues with her ex-fiancée Max, who was in a magic accident and has no memory of her. That’s about all I can do to sum it up. I don’t want to write a scathing review, I think this book simply wasn’t for me. I agreed to review it thinking it was more of a mystery book, and not some strange ode to cats. Within about four chapters, I was completely lost and was never able to get into the story or the characters, and ended up just scanning the rest.

Blog Tour Sign Up: Chosen by Denise Grover Swank

Everything Emma Thompson owns fits in a suitcase she moves from one roach infested motel to another. She and Jake, her five year old son who can see the future, are running from the men intent on taking him. Emma will do anything to protect him even when it means accepting the help of a stranger named Will. Jake insists she needs Will, but Emma’s never needed help before. And even though she’s learned to trust her son, it doesn’t mean she trusts Will.

Mercenary Will Davenport lives in the moment. Hauling Emma to South Dakota should have been an easy job, but his employer neglected to tell him about Emma’s freaky son and the gunmen hot on her trail. Instinct tells him this job is trouble, but nothing can prepare him for Jake’s proclamation that Will is The Chosen One, who must protect Emma from the men hunting her power. A power she doesn’t know she has.

Will protects Emma and Jake on a cross-country chase from the men pursuing them, while struggling with memories from his past, his apprehension of Jake, and his growing attraction to Emma. Will’s overwhelming urge to protect Emma surprises him, especially since it has nothing to do with his paycheck and possibly everything to do with the tattoo Jake branded on his arm. Rich and powerful men are desperate to capture Emma, and Will must discover why before it’s too late.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is a subject that is close to me, and each year I like to do something to bring awareness to the disease, which is the most common cancer among women in the US. This year, I knew I wanted to use my blog as some sort “platform,” but I wasn’t sure the best way to go about it. So, I’m doing this post to announce some of my ideas, and if anyone has any more, please suggest them! Or if anyone wants to team up together, holler at me! I’m open to any and all suggestions.
My first thought is tied with the Chick Lit Challenge that I host. For every review that is submitted for the challenge, I will donate $1 to the Susan G. Komen organization. Second, I will have a donation button up on Chick Lit Plus from early September to the end of October, and all donations that I receive will also go directly to the Susan G. Komen organization. These are two ideas that are pretty set in stone for me.
Another idea I was thinking about was doing some sort of contest, where women can submit articles to be published on Chick Lit Plus. The subjects could range from how breast cancer has affected you, to what you do to help find the cure. One story could be chosen each week and featured on CLP, and the ones who get chosen could win a prize- maybe a book?  If anyone wants to donate any sort of prizes to this, that would fantastic! Again, this is just an idea, not one I have decided on for sure, and I am hoping to get some feedback from all you lovelies that take the time to read my blog. If you have any other suggestions or comments, feel free to leave them below, or email me at Samantha@ChickLitPlus.com . Thanks everyone, hopefully this will be great and we can make it a yearly tradition!

Alyssa Milano Welcomes Son

And baby makes three! One of my favorite actresses and sports enthusiasts, Alyssa Milano, welcomed son Milo Thomas Bugliari on Wednesday morning. According to People.com, Milo was born at 9:27 a.m. He weighed 7 lbs., and was 19 inches long. This is the first child for Milano, 38, and husband Hollywood agent David Bugliari, who married in 2009.

Jackpot by Jackie Pilossoph

Siblings Jamie and Danny Jacobson are not looking for love. Jamie has been burned by a cheating ex-husband, and has lost faith in the meaning of love and faithfulness. Danny is an aspiring actor who also works as a teacher, and is better at one night stands than any real relationships. But brother and sister get the shock of their life when their slightly overbearing Jewish mother, Frankie, wins the lottery. Frankie, who lost her husband when the children were both young, has wanted to be fulfilled by grandchildren for years. After her lottery winnings flow in, she devises a plan to get those grandchildren- a promise of $8 million dollars that Jamie and Danny can collect if they produce a child. The siblings are shocked- until the scent of money starts to become intoxicating. Jamie decides to use her co-worker, Drew, who has always crushed on her, to help her become pregnant. But along the way, Jamie thinks she could actually be falling in love with him- but doesn’t know how to confess the real reason she finally gave him a chance. And Danny falls head over heels with Courtney, a business owner who cares more about his teaching than acting career, but is crushed when she reveals she cannot have children. Both Jamie and Danny need to decide, do they pick love- or the cash prize?

Jackpot! is the second novel from Jackie Pilossoph, who once again will not disappoint. The story is written in alternating point of views, between the brother and sister. Pilossoph once again shows off her ability to get into a man’s head and write effectively from the male perspective. Both Jamie and Danny could seem selfish, but with snappy dialogue, loveable personality traits, and a soft spot for families, the two main characters will become your friends throughout the story. I enjoyed that not only was this novel light and funny, but there was a serious note underneath it all. What would you pick if you had to make the choice- love or money? Many of us would say love in a heartbeat, but the characters go through very real struggles along the way to make their decisions. I thought the entire novel had a very real feel to it, and I liked watching how it would all come together. Add in a heart clenching plot twist with Frankie, and plenty of scenes that will leave you laughing out loud, Jackie Pilossoph definitely hits the Jackpot! with her sophomore novel.

Celebrity Rant: Kelly Osbourne on Kate Middleton

I don’t usually take to my blog to vent about celebrities, but this article really had me stewing. I gave it a few weeks to see if I would become less angry, but…I’m still pretty angry when I think about it. Kelly Osbourne, who I have always been a big fan of, slammed Kate Middleton aka Duchess of Cambridge for Kate’s repeated use of, well, repeating outfits. The Duchess has often been photographed wearing the same labels and even the same articles of clothing. Oh the shock and horror. When Osbourne, who cohost the E! show Fashion Police, appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno earlier in the month, she took a stab at Middleton, saying, “In England they’re like, ‘Look how thrifty she’s being, showing the British public that the Royals are in a recession as well.’ Only in this country they call it a faux pas. I’m sorry, but if I had that job I would only wear it once. If I am going to be the future bloody Queen of England I’m going to wear that dress once because I’m giving up the rest of my life, all of my privacy. At least I can get a new dress every day!”

I kept digging deep to figure out why these statements bothered me so much. And I think it’s because I’m increasingly bothered by celebrities in general in our society. The USA was plummeted into a recession, is very well heading towards another one, have had horrible natural disasters strike, like the devastating tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri, yet we “normal” folk have to watch the news about how celebrities spend their money. And talk about frivolous. It wasn’t too long after the Joplin tornado that Kim Kardashian received at 20.5 carat ring from Kris Humphries. I’ve read about Rachel Zoe spending $87,000 on her baby’s nursery. And then to read about reality TV stars such as the Jersey Shore cast and Kate Gosselin and the ridiculous amounts of money they pull in and spend all on themselves. It’s a little sickening. Maybe people like me look up to someone like Kate Middleton, who doesn’t let that fact the she is now royalty and can have anything she wants go to her head. Maybe we appreciate a real role model who we know we won’t see in a sex tape or doing cartwheels while wearing no panties while out wasted a bar some night. Does anyone else agree with me here? I’m just getting tired of seeing celebs feel the need to have three houses, ten cars, closets full of clothes they never wear, etc., while so much of the country struggles. Do I think celebrities are to blame or should single handily fix us? No, of course not. But I wish people that are more privileged than most could understand that not everyone lives their lavish lives. I personally appreciate Kate Middleton and what she stands for. The more you read about celebrities, politicians, athletes, and anyone else with a large bank account and have a media presence, you see they mostly care about themselves. Greed, lust, sloth, wrath, envy…anyone catching the Seven Deadly Sins here when it comes to them? And again, to make sure I’m not offending everyone with the title “celebrity” attached to them- I don’t mean all of them. There are certainly celebrities like the Jolie-Pitts, George Clooney, Matt Damon, etc. that are constantly in the news because they are giving back in some way or another. Even Drew Barrymore and Hayden Panettiere are making headlines for their charitable donations. Is it possible to be rich and famous without being a snob and inconsiderate? Yes. Is it possible to be royalty and still have a solid head on your shoulders? Yes. Thank you Kate Middleton for wearing the same outfits and showing that just because you’re famous doesn’t have to mean you’re out of touch with the rest of the world and have to succumb to the pressures that are placed on you. And shame on you Kelly Osbourne for calling her out because of it. I think we need more Kate Middleton’s for children and young people- and heck, even myself- to look up to. Who else is your ten year old daughter seeing on the TV- Snooki and OctoMom? What a frightening thought.
