Book Review: Psycho-Mommy by Mira Harlon

I received a copy of Psycho-Mommy by Mira Harlon in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:
Jessica Reed, a vibrant type-A-psychologist, is the ultimate planner:
 – Acceptance to the Ivy League school of her choice … (check!)
 – Graduating Summa Cum Laude and securing the ultimate post, as a sought after psychologist at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world…. (check!)
 – Marrying Nolan, the man of her dreams (check!)
All is going according to the plan, UNTIL… is it possible? She’s pregnant right after her honeymoon! But, that’s not part of the plan. There are so many more things that are supposed to happen before babies. Are her dreams to start a private practice or Nolan’s dream to work for the Philadelphia Flyers crushed?
When Jess finally accepts the obvious, she starts to unravel. Hold on for a wild ride through Jess’ brilliant yet quirky mind as she obsesses about all things pregnancy – morning sickness, weight gain, proper nutrition, kegels, home baby-proofing, pure exhaustion and honing her sexiness (let’s just say it gets a bit awkward). Along the way Jess’s zany patients, friends, family members and colleagues, manage in ways, both big and small, to contribute to her pregnancy fixations. Does her obsession turn her into “psycho-mommy”?
With incredible wit and amazing perception into the human psyche, Mira Harlon keeps you coming back for more. This ironic, feel-good read will have you laughing and crying and wondering if we don’t all have a little psycho-mommy in us!
Review:
While I do not have a child of my own yet, I enjoy reading books about mothers and especially expecting moms, because we hope to start a family in the next few years. This book covers all the ups and downs pregnancy can bring – the happiness and excitement, the morning sickness and stress, and everything in between. There is a lot of humor in the book which I liked, and the supporting characters are quite cute as well – I especially enjoyed reading about Simmi and Jessica’s mom! What I didn’t like so much was the extreme use of exclamation points and the editing that really needed to be tightened up. For as much as I liked the plot, those issues were pretty distracting. I still enjoyed this book and laughed my way through it, I just wish the editing was up to par as well.

CLP Blog Tours Book Review: Adventure to Love by Bethany …

Bethany Ramos is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Adventure to Love
Summary:
In a “Bachelor” meets “Survivor”-style reality TV show, twelve women are flown to an undisclosed location to meet the eligible bachelor Ky, a former boy band member and the privileged son of an LA plastic surgeon. After arriving at a beautiful resort in Bali, the women compete for a chance at love as they fight to win Ky’s affection.

Morgan, the blunt, down-to-earth, girl next door; Harper, a wannabe Hollywood starlet who is competing not only for her fifteen minutes of fame but to win enough money for breast implants; and Brinkley, the innocent, Jesus-loving Midwesterner who believes that she and Ky are a match made in heaven, must go head-to-head with nine other women on group dates and in challenges to stay in the competition.

What happens behind the scenes when a dating reality show goes awry?
Review:
I have also read 5 Stages of Grief by Ramos and highly enjoyed the way she writes chick lit, so I was looking forward to a new book from her. Adventure to Love does not disappoint! There is humor, travel, romance, back-stabbing, and more humor between the pages. At first I thought the book was only going on focus on Harper and that made me a little worried as she isn’t very likeable, but luckily we also get perspectives from Morgan and Brinkley, and they really added a lot to the story. I was curious to see who would win the competition because it seemed that while each girl brought something different to the show, I couldn’t quite picture any of them with Ky. But I enjoyed the ending and the book overall!

CLP Blog Tours Book Review: Between Friends by Amanda Cowen

Amanda Cowen is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Between Friends
Summary:
The only way to have a friend is to be one…especially between the sheets…

When neurotically challenged and unlucky in love Megan Daniels is propositioned by her life-long friend Ben Romano with a coin toss (heads, they sleep together, tails, they don’t) the night before they are about to attend a destination wedding, she drunkenly accepts his challenge. But when Megan wakes up the next morning with a bad hang-over and Ben in her bed, she is more than mortified. It isn’t until the tropical heat begins to ignite emotions Megan never believed or thought she could possibly have, when she starts to question if risking their friendship is the answer to finding true love.

A cute and contemporary debut novel, BETWEEN FRIENDS faces one girl’s struggle between the fine lines of friendship and love and the risk of opening up her heart to the possibility of forever.
Review:
Since my upcoming wedding is just weeks away, I’ve been a big fan of books that are about weddings or really just have a wedding in them – which Between Friends does! The wedding scenes were a lot of fun to read about-especially the actual wedding when a lot of drama goes down – but of course the real story is about Megan and Ben, longtime friends that decide to cross that friendship line into something more. With a lot of twists and turns along the way – including one big twist that I didn’t see coming – Megan and Ben try to decide if being together is the right thing and if not – can their friendship survive them sleeping together? I know the storyline might seem pretty predictable, but there was plenty of good plot twists thrown in there to keep it fresh and fun. I didn’t love all of the supporting cast, in particular Megan’s girlfriends, but I don’t think enough time was spent on their friendship to help readers understand why all these very different females were friends. Overall I thought this was cute and quick read, perfect for the beach while enjoying a drink!
