Book Review: The Paparazzi Project by Kristina M. Springer

I received a copy of THE PAPARAZZI PROJECT by Kristina M. Springer in exchange for an honest review.

The Paparazzi Project begins as Livvie Peterson signs up for Interpersonal Communications, thinking that it would be an easy grade. Turns out, as their first assignment is handed out, her world flips upside down. She is assigned the role of Paparazzi and she is matched up with class hottie, Chas Montgomery as her Tabloid boss. Together they make one killer team and their skills really shine through. But, when Livvie decides to launch an anonymous blog that leaks photos and stories from her fellow classmates online, things start to get interesting. She becomes addicted to constantly checking her follower numbers and becomes dangerously close to crossing the line. Will she be able to reel herself back into reality? Or will she be forever lost into the new world that she has created?

I had so much fun reading this book and I was very upset when it ended. As an avid former watcher of Gossip Girl, this book was right up my alley and I instantly fell for Livvie Peterson. She is a very enjoyable character and I was so intrigued when the assignment was first handed out. At first, I thought that things would stay tame … but I was so wrong. This book is witty and hilarious and is also an excellent example of how rumors start. Honestly, I felt like I was back in high school and I can only imagine what would have happened if my school had a similar project to this back in the day. It wouldn’t have been pretty. Overall though, this book is a great read and I was very impressed.

lisaTitle: Come Home

Author: Lisa Scottoline

Received: Ebury Press

Synopsis: Lisa Scottoline has delivered taut thrillers with a powerful emotional wallop in her New York Times bestsellers Save Me, Think Twice, and Look Again. Now, with her new novel, Come Home, she ratchets up the suspense with the riveting story of a mother who sacrifices her future for a child from her past.

Jill Farrow is a typical suburban mom who has finally gotten her and her daughter’s lives back on track after a divorce. She is about to remarry, her job as a pediatrician fulfills her—though it is stressful—and her daughter, Megan, is a happily over-scheduled thirteen-year-old juggling homework and the swim team.

But Jill’s life is turned upside down when her ex-stepdaughter, Abby, shows up on her doorstep late one night and delivers shocking news: Jill’s ex-husband is dead. Abby insists that he was murdered and pleads with Jill to help find his killer. Jill reluctantly agrees to make a few inquiries and discovers that things don’t add up. As she digs deeper, her actions threaten to rip apart her new family, destroy their hard-earned happiness, and even endanger her own life. Yet Jill can’t turn her back on a child she loves and once called her own.

Come Home reads with the breakneck pacing of a thriller while also exploring the definition of motherhood, asking the questions: Do you ever stop being a mother? Can you ever have an ex-child? What are the limits to love of family?

Book Review: Grace Unexpected by Gale Martin

I received a copy of GRACE UNEXPECTED by Gale Martin in exchange for an honest review.

In a cleverly plotted romantic comedy, GRACE UNEXPECTED features thirty-something Grace Savage, who has made her way through terrible job after terrible job and gone through a muddy puddle of bad men who had commitment phobia. In an effort to shake things up, she visits her mother, who conveniently lives in Shaker Village in New Hampshire, and there she finds something completely unexpected. In Shaker Village, she learns that men and women live side by side and work together in complete celibacy. She is intrigued to say the least, but when her boyfriend dumps her instead of proposing, Grace adopts the Shaker way of life. She vows to stick it out with her new lifestyle, but when she returns to her old life, she struggles when begins juggling two bachelors. They test her will but she stays strong. Will Grace finally find the man of her dreams? Or will she crack before then?

I had so much fun reading GRACE UNEXPECTED and was completely surprised by the ending of the book (no spoilers here please). Gale does such an amazing job at crafting realistic characters but adding a fun little flair to each of them. I loved the time that Grace spent in the Shaker village and I found the idea quite interesting and unique – definitely something I’ve never read in a book before. Overall, this book is really fun and quite funny and heartwarming. I think that if you are looking for a contemporary romantic comedy, then this book is for you.

Book Review: Up Close by Henriette Gyland

I was provided with a copy of UP CLOSE by Henriette Gyland in exchange for an honest review.

The book begins with the unexpected death of Dr. Lia Thompson’s grandmother and she needs to head to Norfolk to pay her respect. But, as she arrives to her grandmother’s house, she gets an eerie feeling that there is more to her death than meets the eye. She begins to dig a little deeper, but along the way she runs into Aidan, who crushed hard on Lia when they were kids. The two get closer the longer that she sticks around, but it is only a matter of time until she realizes that Aidan has been scarred, but internally and externally from his accident when serving in the navy, and he has secrets too. But, as Lia inches closer to the truth, she begins to question Aidan and his motives and wonders if she should even trust him? Or is he too close for her to see the truth?

I started reading UP CLOSE and was instantly drawn in by the suspense, mystery and intrigue. This book is very suspenseful and has a very quick pace which is a great thing for a reader. And, to make things even better, there is a romance on top of all of the mystery and it will definitely leave you wondering until the very last minute whether or not Aidan can be trusted. It seems like there is literally a secret on every page and each of the characters has their own demons to conquer, which makes the book that much more entertaining. Overall, this was a fast paced read that I enjoyed very much.

Baby Talk: 9 Months Old

Ethan will officially be 9 months old this upcoming Tuesday (the 26th) and it hit me a few days ago that I need to start planning his first birthday party. Holy cow, right? When did this little guy become almost a whole year old?

Ethan 8.5 months 2Let’s see, so what has Ethan been up to? Absolutely everything! It is crazy to think about all of the things that he can do now vs. what he could do a month ago. Ethan is VERY mobile these days. He is standing and shuffling along items and I know that it is only a few weeks until he will be full on walking. Crazy, right? Another key milestone, the little guy has been sleeping really, really well. In the past two weeks I’ve actually had to wake him up a few times for school, which I’ve never had to do his whole life. I sure have been enjoying it though!

Here are a few updates about life at 9 months:

Food: My boy is an still quite an EATER! There really isn’t anything new with this one, but we are about to start introducing a few new foods and I will probably have a big update next month about how he does with it all.

Favorite Toys: Ethan has been really big into playing with empty bottles, empty containers and pretty much anything that isn’t actually a toy. He also has quite the fondness for books. Maybe he is used to always seeing mommy with a book in hand that he now favors them as well. I’m definitely not complaining.

Things we’ve left behind: Pretty much any and all props, we haven’t used his swing in weeks.

Teeth: Still none. But, he’s had a fluctuating fever all week and tons of drool, so we might have one on the horizon.

Ethan V-DayFavorite activities: Standing, Letting go of things to work on his balance, Crawling, playing, eating, story time, walks, going to the playground and ANYTHING outdoors.

Daycare: Still loves it. One of his teachers has quite the soft spot for him.

Height/Weight: Oh goodness. Not entirely sure but he is big!

anneTitle: Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald

Author: Therese Anne Fowler

Received: From St. Martins Press

Synopsis: I wish I could tell everyone who thinks we’re ruined, Look closer…and you’ll see something extraordinary, mystifying, something real and true. We have never been what we seemed.

When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen years old and he is a young army lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Before long, the “ungettable” Zelda has fallen for him despite his unsuitability: Scott isn’t wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner, and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. Her father is deeply unimpressed. But after Scott sells his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to Scribner’s, Zelda optimistically boards a train north, to marry him in the vestry of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and take the rest as it comes.

What comes, here at the dawn of the Jazz Age, is unimagined attention and success and celebrity that will make Scott and Zelda legends in their own time. Everyone wants to meet the dashing young author of the scandalous novel—and his witty, perhaps even more scandalous wife. Zelda bobs her hair, adopts daring new fashions, and revels in this wild new world. Each place they go becomes a playground: New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French Riviera—where they join the endless party of the glamorous, sometimes doomed Lost Generation that includes Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein.

Everything seems new and possible. Troubles, at first, seem to fade like morning mist. But not even Jay Gatsby’s parties go on forever. Who is Zelda, other than the wife of a famous—sometimes infamous—husband? How can she forge her own identity while fighting her demons and Scott’s, too? With brilliant insight and imagination, Therese Anne Fowler brings us Zelda’s irresistible story as she herself might have told it.
