Mirabelle Moncur is clearly a goddess. From her enchanting looks that haven’t faded at age 60, to her commanding and domineering presence in any situation, and the way she flawlessly goes through men like sex is nothing, the women screams confident, secure, and goddess-like. Kate Disney is the opposite. Unlike Mirri, Kate will never be a film star, never be sultry, and can’t seem to get past the ‘slug’ of a boyfriend, Jake, who treats Kate like she is indispensable.
When Mirri, animal activist living in Africa, moves to London, she and Kate quickly become friends, and Kate tries to be more like Mirri. She breaks it off with Jake, heads to Capri for a short fling, and begins to live her life more freely and passionately, finally beginning to take a real interest in her career as a painter. But when an old friend reveals himself as a love interest and Jake suddenly is the pining boyfriend she has always wanted, Kate is unsure what her next move will be. In the end, Mirri shows her the true meaning of love, in a very Mirri-like fashion.
The Goddess Rules by Clare Naylor is not only a humorous book with engaging plot twists, but also shows the struggles of someone trying to figure out what love is. Is it right to be with someone that loves you simply because you love them? That and other puzzles fill the plot and will keep readers interest hooked, especially with the supporting cast filling in any holes. I will say that I thought at times the book seemed to go on a little too long, but it only took a few more pages to get me interested in a new situation that started. The ending was particularly a jaw-dropper, and kept me thinking about the characters even after I was finished reading about them.

The Second Assistant is truly a tale from the bottom of the Hollywood ladder. Elizabeth Miller decided to give up her comfortable job as a Washington senator’s aide to get her shot in the glamorous Hollywood elite. She joins on to The Agency, a powerful representation company, but quickly finds herself the odd one out. Her hair is not highlighted, her clothes are not designer, her car is a clunker, and readers seriously doubt that Lizzie can pull it off in LA. Her naïve sense gets her in to trouble on more than one occasion- falling for the wrong guys, getting roofied at dinner, thinking someone is a friend when they are really out to sabotage her every move- but readers will cheer for Lizzie as we watch her grow up in between the pages. Lizzie slowly gains friends and a sense of desire- she wants to produce and has an excellent opportunity land on her lap. But can she pull it off when she once again is hung out to dry by a ‘friend’ when a better opportunity comes along?
Clare Naylor & Mimi Hare give readers a tantalizing peek behind the scenes of the Hollywood lifestyle and the major players (think Cameron, George and Leo) and the entertaining and outrageous scenarios that the heroine finds herself caught up in keeps the book on pace. The Second Assistant offers a fun, fast, a laugh out loud chick lit novel.
The First Assistant by Clare Naylor & Mimi Hare is a chick lit riot. Attempt to keep up with Lizzie Miller as she powers her way through the Hollywood elite as an assistant to a scurvy boss with a thing for young models, who also happens to be the husband of Lizzie’s bestie. Travel to Thailand as Lizzie watches over her hotter than thou young client, learning valuable lessons about Hollywood, love, and life in general. As Lizzie’s own love life collapses when her and her wealthy almost-fiancée, Luke Lloyd, are forced to work on separate continents, Lizzie has to decide what is best for her- continue the circus ride that is Hollywood, or throw it all behind to be the housewife that Luke wants her to be. This tale draws you in ‘behind the curtain’ of the Hollywood scene, making you feel that you are right in the mix with the elite and wealthy.
