My First 5K: Complete!

I did! My first 5K is complete šŸ™‚ The Color Run was such a fun experience. There were 27,000 people registered in Des Moines, and the atmosphere just screamed party. It was a great way to ease into the running world! I ran with my girlfriend Holly, and we tried our best to look pretty ridiculous ā€“ as you can see from our picture! At the end, we were a mess! We ran through four color stations along the run, where people were having a great time throwing the paint on us, and then at the end once we finished we participated in a color throw. The paint wasnā€™t like what you paint a room with it, it was a more dust-like paint. Everyone who registered got a packet of the paint, and once you finished, you got to throw it in the air and have the colors rain down. Combined with thousands of people doing it at the same time ā€“ bananas. I literally lost my vision during the color throw, it was CRAZY!! But overall, a great experience, and I am definitely hooked. Holly and I are running another 5K in November (BRRRR!) and our award at the end ā€“ chocolate! The run is sponsored by a chocolate store in Des Moines, and proceeds go to the John Stoddard Cancer Center ā€“ a win/win there. Iā€™ve had a lot of fun blogging about my first 5K experience, and I hope to share some more with you after my second race!

My First 5K: One Week To Go!

One more week! I am currently on vacation as I type this; sitting at my sisterā€™s house watching her Labordoodle run around looking for food scraps and my youngest nephew trying to wake up my fiancĆ© so they can play together. I completed my workout schedule before we hopped on the plan on Friday, though I still have one more thirty minute run that I will get in today. My sister, brother-in-law, niece and oldest nephew are out at baseball tournaments, so the house is quiet and calm enough for me to get a run in today. We got our pre-race documents emailed to us last night, and Saturday will here before we know it! My next post will be my last on my 5K, and Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll have some pictures as well to share. Very excited to get this first one under my belt, and hopefully there will be more to come!
Below is my workout schedule for the week. Bold is my regular schedule, non-bold is my 5K training.
Monday: Run 10 minutes, walk 10 minutes, 20 minute treadmill walk/run
Tuesday: Walk 15 minutes, 60 minute elliptical, 15 minute Pilates DVD- abs
Wednesday: Run 15 minutes, walk 15 minutes, 20 minute treadmill walk/run
Thursday: Walk 15 minutes, 60 minute treadmill walk on incline, 40 minute Yoga DVD
Friday: Day Off
Saturday: Day Off
Sunday: Run 30 minutes

My First 5K: Week 15: Training on Vacation

Two more weeks to go before The Color Run comes to Des Moines! My training schedule this week and next is a little shifted around. I usually run on Monday, Wednesday and Saturdayā€™s, but we had a wedding out of town this weekend that my fiancĆ© was in, and we will be on vacation starting next Friday visiting my family in North Carolina. When I go on vacations I almost always pack my athletic shoes and can usually fit in at least one for two workouts. The wedding this weekend wasnā€™t too bad, we left Friday morning and got home Sunday afternoon, so I simply did my Saturday run on Thursday. But next week will be a bit harder, and Iā€™m not positive yet how my schedule will go. But I think itā€™s important to be conscientious of what your schedule looks like, because I know I would hate not working out or getting in at least two runs Friday- Tuesday (our vacation schedule) and then come home and have The Color Run happen in four days. But hopefully it will all work out and Iā€™ll feel prepared on October 6 for the 3.1 mile run!
Below is my workout schedule for the week. Bold is what I would normally complete, non-bold is the 5K training.
Monday: Run 10 minutes, walk 10 minutes
Tuesday: Walk 15 minutes, 50 minute Billy Blank cardio DVD
Wednesday: Run 15 minutes, walk 15 minutes, 30 minute elliptical
Thursday: Walk 15 minutes, run/walk 3.1 miles
Friday: 20 minute treadmill run/walk
Saturday: Day Off
Sunday: 30 minute treadmill incline walk

My First 5K: Week 13: Cotton Balls

Last week I was talking about my ears, and the issues that I have with pain when I am running outdoors. Well, last week the…

My First 5K: Week 12: Ouch, My Ears

I completed my 30 minute run outside yesterday, and I ran into a big problem. Iā€™ve run outside off and on throughout my training, and the weather has been warm, warm, warm. Now the days and especially the mornings/evenings are cooling off, I was reminded of an annoying issue that I have been plagued with since childhood ā€“ my ears. I suffered from multiple ear infections and horrible cases of swimmerā€™s ear. And these problems have stuck with me. Last year when I was visiting my family in North Carolina, we took a trip to Myrtle Beach. The weather was overcast and chilly, but we still braved it and took a dip in the ocean. Once I got water in my ears and then the wind started blowing, it was too painful for me to pretend I was having a good time. I had to get out of the water and out of the wind so I could think straight again.
I have noticed this problem with my ears even when I am running in the gym and the fans are turned on high. After a while, my ears start to hurt so bad that I either have to turn the fans off and tough it out, or give up. When my fiancĆ© and I were running yesterday, there was a strong wind blowing the majority of the time, and when we were running into the wind, I felt like I might throw up because the pain was so bad. Iā€™m worried now for the 5K, which is happening October 6. The weather will be much cooler, and if itā€™s a windy day, Iā€™m worried I wonā€™t be able to complete the run. Iā€™m not sure if I should get ear plugs, wax, use cotton balls? Has anyone else run into this problem or know someone who has? I want to have a fun experience, but Iā€™m worried that my inner ear problem will put a damper on the day. Iā€™d be grateful for suggestions!
Below is my workout schedule for the week. Bold items are what I would normally complete, non- bold are the 5K training.

Tuesday: Walk 15 minutes, 50 sit-ups, 60 minute elliptical, 20 minute treadmill incline walk
Wednesday: Run 15 minutes, walk 15 minutes, 10 minute cardio DVD
Thursday: Walk 15 minutes, 50 sit-ups, 60 minute treadmill incline walk, 10 minute Pilates DVD
Friday: 20 minute treadmill incline walk
Saturday: 30 minute run
Sunday: Day Off

My First 5K: Week 11: Running Shoes

With the Color Run getting closer, my attention has shifted to my running shoes. I am currently training in my Reebok Toning Shoes ā€“ and if you hadnā€™t read my post about them, I would suggest it. While I thought they were fine athletic shoes, I never noticed any toning about them, and I also updated my post with the lawsuit that came against Reebok for their false claims. About two weeks ago I received my refund check in the mail. Like I said in my post ā€“ comfortable shoes and all, but I bought them for the toning effect. Iā€™ve had them for over a year, and there are now holes near where my toes are, and Iā€™m getting ready to pitch them. Since during the Color Run we will be pelted with paint, I wanted to wear shoes that I wouldnā€™t mind throwing away ā€“ my Reebok toning shoes will be that pair. But Iā€™m now looking for a new pair of running shoes to have once I throw those away. Any suggestions? Iā€™m not a distance runner or marathon runner, but I will continue to run at least two days a week, along with my usual walks and elliptical workouts. I havenā€™t started the research yet on new shoes, but I will be grateful for any suggestions you might have! Below is my workout schedule for Week 11 of my 5K training. The bold is what I would normally complete, non-bold is my 5K schedule.

Monday: Run 9 minutes, walk 1 x2
Tuesday: Walk 15 minutes, 50 sit-ups, 30 minute elliptical, 30 minute Yoga DVD
Wednesday: Run 9 minutes, walk 1 x 3
Thursday: Walk 15 minutes, 50 sit-ups, 30 minute treadmill walk (incline ā€“ 12)
Friday: Day Off
Saturday: Run 30 minutes
Sunday: 30 minute treadmill walk on incline

My First 5K: The Color Run

I am excited to share the news that I have signed up for my first 5K run! I love fitness and exercise, but I have never entered any kind of run, race, relay, etc., excerpt for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, but I usually end up walking that. So my girlfriend and I decided to start expanding our comfort zones, and our first 5K will be in October of this year. The one we are currently signed up for is called The Color Run, and basically ā€“ you run, and get pain thrown on you. Thatā€™s right ā€“ paint. You get a plain white T with registration, and by the end of the race, youā€™re just covered in paint. Oh boy. But Iā€™m excited to do this, and hopefully we can work our way up to more 5Ks, maybe 10K or evenā€¦a half or full marathon one day. The lovely Sara from CLP just told me the other day that she has done many runs in the past, and is going to attempt a full marathon soon. That is so awesome!
Sometimes I feel a bit silly getting so excited over a 5K, especially when I talk to people who have done plenty of them. But itā€™s my first one, my first real time at running ( I donā€™t run ā€“ ever) so I decided to take it a step further and blog about my experience. Since part of CLP is dedicated to Health & Fitness, I figured this would fit right in. Iā€™ll share my training schedule that was done up for me, how Iā€™m trying to get healthier as a whole for the run (mainly watching my diet more carefully) and just my thoughts on being scared Iā€™m not going to be able to run the three miles. If anyone has run before and has any tips, or will be running soon, feel free to join the conversation! I would love to hear from you ļŠ
So for Week 1, which was June 11-17, it started off with baby steps. This is good for me, because I am not joking when I said I didnā€™t run. My workouts are yoga, Pilates, Zumba, kickboxing, walking on an incline on the treadmill, elliptical or stationery bike. Do you see running in there? I donā€™t play any sports, period, and never go for ā€œfun runs.ā€ (If there is such a thing.) The last time I remember running at all was senior year of high school for a warm-up in gym class, and I was always the last out of the locker room. How is it that I love fitness but hate running? Donā€™t know, but thatā€™s me.
So my schedule looked like this:
Monday: Walk 3 minutes, run 5 minutes, walk 2 minutes
Tuesday: Walk 5 minutes
Wednesday: Walk 4 minutes, run 8 minutes, walk 4 minutes
Thursday: Walk 10 minutes
Friday: Off
Saturday: Walk 5 minutes, run 10 minutes, walk 5 minutes
Sunday: Off
Now, that does seem like a fairly easy workout schedule, but keep in my mind I already create monthly workoutā€™s for myself, so really, my schedule looked like this:
Monday: Walk 3 minutes, run 5 minutes, walk 2 minutes, 60 minute elliptical
Tuesday: Walk 5 minutes, Kettleball workout ā€“ 20 minutes, Billy Blanks 50 minute Tae Bo DVD
Wednesday: Walk 4 minutes, run 8 minutes, walk 4 minutes, 60 minute treadmill walk, incline
Thursday: Walk 10 minutes, Kettleball workout ā€“ 20 minutes, Yoga DVD ā€“ 30 minutes
Friday: Off ā€“ Kettleball workout ā€“ 20 minutes
Saturday: Walk 5 minutes, run 10 minutes, walk 5 minutes
Sunday: Off Pilates DVD, abs ā€“ 20 minutes
For my diet, I donā€™t eat the best, but I have made some changes. I switched my sugary breakfast cereal to Special K Fruit and Yogurt cereal, and changed my snacks to Ranch Wheat Thins. I am cutting back on fast food, and am down to one soda per week. I like using this 5K ā€“ and an upcoming friendā€™s wedding ā€“ as motivation to really get healthy. So let the training begin!
