Book Review: A Woman Alone by Nina Laurin

About the Book

It’s another bright, sunny day in Venture, Illinois, the sort of place where dreams come true and families can get a fresh start. Cecelia Holmes deserves it after the home invasion that shattered her previous life. Now everything seems perfect – her high-security SmartHome, her doting husband, her sweet daughter.

Until she begins to feel spied on. Her husband doesn’t believe her. Her neighbors ignore her. So when she discovers a shocking secret about the prior occupant of their house, she feels that she has no one to turn to. And now Cecelia must face her fears alone…

My Review

I’m a big fan of Nina Laurin, and this book sounded like a psychological thriller with that creepy technology factor included that makes you wonder if it could be real life one day soon. The smart home Cecelia and her family are living in does everything for them – making the coffee, setting the music, running the bath, you name it – but you don’t even have to ask the house to do it, it simply knows. But the houses in the neighborhood seem to have an unsettling effect on their residents – they know your secrets, and turn those against you. Readers follow along many twists and turns as Cecelia gets closer to uncovering the real reason for the smart homes and why the neighborhood now exists. The novel definitely kept me on my toes, but not quite as invested as some of Laurin’s novels from the past. Some plot points seemed disjointed to the story and the ending just left me with a so-so feeling. Not my favorite read from her, but it was okay.
