Book Review: Thank you, Next by Andie J Christopher

About the Book

Alex Turner is never The One—but always the last one an ex dates before finding love—and now she’s determined to find out why in this hilarious new rom-com.

Single divorce attorney Alex Turner is watching reality TV when she sees her latest ex’s new fiancée picking out her wedding dress. Yet again, the guy she dumped went on to marry (or at least seriously commit to) the next person he dates after her. Fed up with being the precursor to happily ever after, she decides to interview all her exes to find out why.

Up-and-coming chef Will Harkness mixes with Alex like oil and vinegar, but forced proximity growing up means their lives are forever entwined. When Will learns Alex and her friends are going on a wild romp through Los Angeles to reconnect with her ex-boyfriends, he decides to tag along. If he can discover what her exes did wrong, he can make sure he doesn’t make the same mistake with Alex.

On this nonstop journey through the streets of LA, Alex realizes the answer to her question might be the man riding shotgun…

My Review

There was a lot from the synopsis that drew me into this book, and I finished it thinking there was so much untapped potential. Alex is a single divorce attorney and I loved her toughness, her very candid take no prisoners attitude when it came to dating. Yet throughout the story, we see that as more of a façade and while it’s definitely understandable that people are indeed hiding behind said facade, it made it a little confusing to follow her storyline. She seemed like a character that was actually pretty unsure of what she wanted and maybe if we got more vulnerable moments from her they would have made more sense, but as a reader I kept finding myself confused on which Alex was showing up in the next chapter. The love story between her and Will I also found a bit lacking. It’s clear from page three that both are interested in each other and have been for years, and the internal dialogue from both characters was a little over the top for two adults that won’t share their feelings throughout the majority of the book. The enemies to lovers angle wasn’t quite there because their feelings of angst toward one another was just their outward expression to protect themselves, and it was obvious we were just waiting for them to get together from the get go.

I did appreciate the diversity of the cast and the modern writing – from Alex’s ball-busting the guys she dated to some very intense sex scenes, it seems this was fearlessly written to discuss not just hard topics, but even some taboo ones as well. I did love Alex’s grandmother Lexi, and looked forward to all of the scenes she had a say in. I had hoped to enjoy this one a little more but not a favorite rom com for me.
