Book Review: The Secret Love Letters of Olivia Moretti by Jennifer Probst

About the Book

A secret romance sends three estranged sisters to the Amalfi Coast to follow clues about their mother’s past, and challenges them to a whole new future, in this emotional novel from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst.

Priscilla, Devon, and Bailey haven’t been close in years, but when the sisters are forced to come together to settle their mother’s estate, they discover a secret.  In an old trunk, they happen upon ownership papers for a house on the Amalfi Coast, along with a love letter to their mother from an anonymous man, promising to meet her in Italy during the summer of her sixty-fifth birthday.

Now they’re questioning everything they knew about her history. In order to get answers about the woman they thought they knew, they’ll have to go back to where it all started. The sisters embark on a trip to the stunning cliffside village of Positano, Italy, to track down the mysterious ex-lover, and figure out who their mother really was.

As Priscilla, Devon, and Bailey unearth the truth, they also experience the magic of Italy, the power of sisterly love, a little unexpected romance, and newfound hope for the future.

My Review

I can hardly ever turn down a book set in Italy, and when I read the synopsis of the estranged sisters coming together in memory of their late mother, I knew I had to read this one. After Olivia’s passing, her three daughters discover a deed to a home in Italy plus a love letter addressed to their mother from a man they have never heard of. In the letter, the two have agreed to meet in Italy on her sixty-fifth birthday – a birthday Olivia did not make it to. Trying to uncover this secret life of their mother’s they never knew about, the sisters agree to put aside their differences and get on a plane to Positano to get answers.

While there, each sister also discovers more about not only their mother and the life she lived, but themselves and what they are hoping to get out of their own lives. Priscilla misses her career as a ballet dancer and has begun to feel stifled in her role as simply mother and wife. Devon is the workaholic who can’t take a personal day and is bordering on burnout. And the youngest, Bailey, can never commit to anything – a job or a man. With extra tension between Bailey and Devon regarding a past relationship, the sisters are on shaky ground most of the novel. And while a love story is definitely the main theme for this novel, it’s not just about love in a romantic relationship. It showcases the love between mother and her daughters, and also between sisters and the special the bond they share – no matter what difficult moments come their way. The setting is rich and gorgeous, the storyline is compelling and hard to turn your eyes away from, and this is a perfect beach read for your summer reading list. Highly recommend!
