#BookReview: Behind These Doors by Meg Taylor

behind these doorsAbout the Book

Allison King is a marriage counselor who loves her job and loves her life, the only thing that’s missing is an engagement ring. When her long-term boyfriend is on the brink of proposing, Allison suddenly falls head over heels for her married patient. She’s now torn between marrying the man she’s waited twelve years for, or tearing apart a marriage to claim the one man who has made her feel true love. With so much at stake, her career, her boyfriend, and a marriage, Allison is now faced with the decision of her life, to do what’s rational, or risk it all to follow her heart.

My Review

This book had me feeling conflicted. When I started reading, I was immediately pulled in to the story. Allison was a likeable heroine and I was enjoying her narrative, even when she started to make a feel questionable decisions. The writing was very fast-paced – sometimes maybe a tad too quick if I’m honest – but it sure kept me on my toes and kept me swiping my Kindle. I think the writing was superb, especially considering this is a debut novel, the characters were interesting and I had a lot of feelings – both good and bad, but I think having feelings either way is important while reading – but there still is a but for me. The ending definitely caught me off guard – I told my husband I felt bamboozled at the end, but my other conflict was that Allison couldn’t seem to be happy unless she was in a relationship. Even when considering a move, she updated her online dating profile so she could see potential matches in the new area. It was definitely hard to read about her and her married patient, and then again the ending was just jumping from one to another. I do think the book is intended as a light read and I’m sure several readers could look past those issues because like I said, the writing and pacing of the novel is excellent, but that flaw coupled with the kind of un-satisfying ending had me a little bummed. While the characters and plot are definitely subjective for each reader, there is no denying Meg Taylor’s writing talents, and I will happily read from her again.
