The Bachelorette Party by Karen McCullah Lutz

bachThe Bachelorette Party was one of the first novels that helped reel me in to the chick lit genre. The cover resembled a journal with confetti festively covering it, and (judging the book by its cover) it was going to be a treat. Karen McCullah Lutz co-wrote movies such as Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You, and She’s the Man, which only amped my anticipation higher to dive right in.

Poor Zadie Roberts has been left at the alter. To make it worse ,her ex-fiancée has now become a famous soap star actor. As she tries to heal her wounds and stay away from anything regarding love or weddings, her perfect, pristine cousin announces she is engaged- to Zadie’s best friend! Helen is boring and conservative, albeit beautiful, but still Zadie cannot see what Grey loves about her. Grey asks Zadie a favor- one that will come back to bite him. Loosen Helen up at her bachelorette party. Seems simple enough right? But how much could Zadie loosen Helen with her boring and conservative girl’s night out?

Little does Zadie know about the other side of Helen’s personality, which shines through as the bachelorette party takes a naughty turn. Secrets are confessed, shots are poured, and temptations are presented. The wild night will have you laughing and imagining your own ‘good girl gone bad’ parties (if you have any!) and even cringing at some the nastier and raunchier scenarios. But in the end, Zadie knows she needs to hurt someone- either by protecting Helen and taking her secrets to the grave, or protecting her best friend Grey and warning him of the women is about to say ‘forever’ to. The writing is light hearted, even when the story takes on a deeper side, and is sure to keep you laughing until the end.
