Book Review: Meant to be Mine by Hannah Orenstein

About the Book

From the author of the “funny, sexy, and absurdly entertaining” (Marie ClairePlaying with Matches, a sweeping love story in the vein of Rebecca Serle and Chloe Benjamin about a woman who knows the date she’ll meet her true love—only he isn’t quite as perfect as she always imagined.

What if you knew exactly when you’d meet the love of your life? Edie Meyer knows. When her Grandma Gloria was a young woman, she had a vision of the exact day she would meet her soul mate—and then Grandpa Ray showed up.

Since then, Gloria has accurately predicted the day every single member of the family has met their match. Edie’s day arrives on June 24, 2022, when she’s twenty-nine years old. She has been waiting for it half her life. That morning, she boards an airplane to her twin sister’s surprise engagement, and when a handsome musician sits beside her, she knows it’s meant to be.

But fate comes with more complications than Edie expected and she can’t fight the nagging suspicion that her perfect guy doesn’t have perfect timing. After a tragedy and a shocking revelation rock Edie’s carefully constructed world, she’s forced to consider whether love chooses us, as simple as destiny, or if we choose it ourselves.

My Review

A dabble of magical realism always cheers me up, so when I read the synopsis for Meant To Be Mine, I figured I was going to like it. Stories about the bond between a grandmother and granddaughter are another favorite of mine, thanks to my own special relationship with my grandmother, and the ties between Grandma Gloria and Edie were a joy to read about. I loved the premise of Gloria being able to predict the day those close to her will meet their soulmates – can you imagine how that might feel? For Edie, this meant say good-bye to someone she truly loved simply because she met him before the predicated day. She is shocked at how much the break up hurt when she knew there was no future, but she isn’t as shocked when she meets a handsome stranger on a plane – on Gloria’s predicated day.

There was a lot to this story I loved in addition to the prophecy and tight-knit family – Edie’s career as a stylist was incredibly fun to read about, her relationship with her twin sister was another special bond that brought another layer to the book, and even the underlying theme of politics brought a lot of thought while I was reading. While it was clear Edie was struggling with her relationship – the one Gloria had predicated – I have to say I wasn’t sure exactly how it would all play out. Edie seemed the type to maybe just keep blazing ahead with it because she thought it was the right thing to do by destiny. Or maybe she would go back to her ex … or maybe someone new is in the shadows. I was curious up until the end, and this modern rom com gave me all the feels, a few tears shed and a smile as I closed the book. A perfect addition to your summer reading list.
